United States President Donald Trump has declared that the ceasefire between Washington and Tehran is effectively over following renewed military exchanges between US forces and Iran.

The development comes after the United States launched a fresh wave of airstrikes against Iranian targets, accusing Tehran of attacking commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz and violating an existing ceasefire agreement.

The latest escalation has heightened tensions in the Gulf, with Iran’s Revolutionary Guards also claiming responsibility for attacks on US military installations in the region.

Speaking on Wednesday during a NATO summit in Ankara, Turkey, Trump said he had no interest in continuing diplomatic engagement with the Iranian government.

The US president described Iranian leaders in strong terms and maintained that he considered the ceasefire agreement to have collapsed.

Trump also expressed concern over Iran’s nuclear ambitions, arguing that Tehran could use nuclear weapons if it acquired them.

He stated that, from his perspective, the ceasefire had come to an end following the latest hostilities.

Trump said he planned to consult businessman and negotiator Steve Witkoff as well as his son-in-law, Jared Kushner, both of whom have participated in previous engagements involving Iranian officials.

However, he insisted that any future diplomatic efforts would depend on Iran’s willingness to return to negotiations.

The US president accused Tehran of acting in bad faith and alleged that Iranian officials had misrepresented the terms of the ceasefire agreement reached on June 17.

According to Trump, all parties had agreed that Iran should not possess nuclear weapons, but he claimed Iranian officials later denied discussing the issue after leaving the negotiating table.

The renewed hostilities also unsettled global energy markets, with oil prices reportedly rising by about five per cent amid growing concerns over the security of oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s busiest energy transit routes.
