The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has appointed Nigerian education administrator Dr Amos Josiah Dangut as its new Registrar and Chief Executive Officer for a five-year term running from October 2026 to September 2031.
Dangut, a former Head of WAEC’s Nigeria National Office, assumed office on October 1, 2026, succeeding Alhaji Pateh Bah of The Gambia and becoming the 14th Registrar of the examination body.

The appointment was announced by Demianus G. Ojijeogu, Head of Public Affairs at WAEC Headquarters in Accra, who said the Council ratified Dangut’s appointment during its 74th Annual Meeting held in Accra, Ghana, in March 2026.
Dangut served as Head of the Nigeria National Office from October 2023 to September 2026. He joined WAEC in 1998 after beginning his education career as a WAEC examiner at St. Louis College, Jos, in 1994.
Over the course of his career with WAEC, he served in various capacities, including Assistant Registrar in the Test Development Division in Ogba, Lagos; Head of Examinations Security; Deputy Branch Controller in Uyo and Bauchi; Branch Controller in Yola; Controller of the Post-Examinations Department; Zonal Coordinator in Ikeja; and Deputy Registrar.
He holds a Bachelor of Agriculture in Animal Production, a Master of Science in Animal Science, a PhD in Animal Science and a Master of Education in Administration and Planning.
Dangut has been associated with the use of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) in examination administration. During his tenure as Head of the Nigeria National Office, WAEC introduced initiatives including Computer-Based WASSCE, serialization of examination question papers and a Digital Electronic Marking System.
Other digital initiatives under his tenure included the Digital Certificate Portal, WAEC E-Study Platform, Digital Records Archive and digital systems for examination logistics and examiner monitoring.
Beyond WAEC, Dangut has served on the boards of organisations including the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC), Joint Universities Preliminary Examinations Board (JUPEB), Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) and Grange Educational Foundation.
He has also represented WAEC at the Joint Consultative Committee on Education and the National Council on Education and currently serves as the West African sub-region’s representative on the Executive Board of the Association for Educational Assessment in Africa (AEAA).
Dangut is a Fellow of the Science Teachers Association of Nigeria (STAN) and a member of the Nigeria Institute of Management (NIM). He has also published academic works in national and international journals and presented papers at various conferences.
