Afrobeats superstar David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has revealed that he deliberately kept his father’s involvement in his early music career out of the public eye because he wanted to earn recognition based on his talent rather than his family background.

Speaking in an interview with Vibe Q, the award-winning singer said he often denied any connection to his father whenever he visited a recording studio near his home, fearing that people would treat him differently if they knew he came from a wealthy family. According to Davido, he was determined to prove that his success was driven by ability and hard work, a decision he believes eventually paid off as fans and industry stakeholders came to appreciate his musical talent.

Davido, however, acknowledged the unwavering support he received from his father during his formative years. He disclosed that his father invested more than $100,000 to build a state-of-the-art recording studio for him while he was still a student, enabling him to return home every weekend to record music and develop his craft.

Reflecting on the experience, the singer said the opportunity gave him the platform to hone his skills and lay the foundation for his successful career. “I used to deny my dad whenever I went to the studio down our street. I didn’t want people to know because they’d treat me differently. It all paid off—now they know I was genuinely good at music,” Davido said. “My daddy was ready to give me anything. He built me a studio that cost over $100,000 back then. I was still in school, and I’d come home every weekend to work on music.”
