Sources close to the Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC), the highest decision-making body of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos, claim that Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, the former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, was impeached due to his desire to succeed Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and his alleged disrespect for the state chief executive.

Remember how the members of the Assembly stated they had lost faith in the leadership of Obasa, the longtime speaker of the Lagos Assembly, and based their decision to remove him on six main factors on Monday?

They cited Obasa’s “gross mismanagement and lack of leadership; his highhandedness and lack of regard for the honorable members at all times; intimidation and suppression of members, including inciting members against one another; misappropriation of funds and lack of transparency in his management of the House of Assembly funds; gross abuse of office as speaker of the House of Assembly and authoritarianism, as well as erosion of trust among the members on the speaker,” according to Hon. Obafemi Saheed, who represents Kosofe Constituency 2, who read out the impeachment and the reasons for their action.

According to Newsworld, the speaker went too far after losing favor with Governor Sanwo-Olu, which had a direct impact on his relationship with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. It was alleged that Obasa had previously stated that he was more qualified to lead Lagos State than any of the previous governors. This statement put him at odds with the governor and the president, who are reportedly supporting Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat to succeed Sanwo-Olu.

The Newsworld was informed by an Assembly source that Obasa was impeached due to his disdain for the governor, who is thought to have the president’s allegiance.

“His behavior and demeanor had the potential to cause division within the Lagos State APC.”Obasa lost his seat because of the way he handled his legislative duties, which was overshadowed by his ambition to become governor.

He knows the governor is there because of the president, and they have been at odds.

“In Lagos, it is not about your ambition but about you being the choice but he was never the choice. He was expected to remain calm but he never was ready for that”.

The source said there are several instances of Obasa allegedly undermining the governor’s authority, a situation he described as unacceptable and detrimental to the state’s political stability.

Recall that Obasa was recently tongue-lashed by the president during a meeting with the Governor Sanwo-Olu, Obasa himself and the Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC).

The APC chairman in the state, Cornelius Ojelabi, also attended the crucial meeting.

At the meeting, Tinubu was said to have also expressed his displeasure with the speaker over his rumoured governorship ambition, which watchers of events insist has set the state on a tailspin.

The president was not pleased with the manner Obasa was prosecuting his reported governorship ambition, as he also berated him for his alleged disrespect for Governor Sanwo-Olu.

The president then particularly cited a recent move by the Assembly under Obasa’s leadership, to push for a bill enabling them to sack the chairman of the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC), labeling it as “a huge joke.”

They accused Obasa of making statements likely to disintegrate and put the party into disrepute if he continues to speak carelessly about his gubernatorial ambition in 2027.

Consequently, Tinubu had issued a stern warning to the speaker over his alleged disrespect towards Sanwo-Olu and the esteemed office of the governor.

Meanwhile, the Deputy Speaker, Hon. Mojisola Meranda, was elected to replace him as the new speaker.

Additionally, Hon. Fatai Mojeed, the Deputy Chief Whip, was elected as the new Deputy Speaker.
