The internal crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) took a new turn on Wednesday as rival factions of the party held separate National Executive Committee (NEC) meetings in Abuja, further highlighting divisions within one of Nigeria’s major political parties ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The faction aligned with Nyesom Wike convened its 109th NEC meeting at the party’s national secretariat under the leadership of Abdulrahman Mohammed.

The gathering attracted several prominent figures, including Wike, Iyabo Obasanjo, Isa Pantami, PDP presidential candidate Sandy Onor, National Secretary Samuel Anyanwu, and Mao Ohabunwa

A key item on the agenda was the presentation of Certificates of Return to candidates who emerged from the party’s primaries in preparation for the 2027 elections.

At the same time, another faction of the PDP, led by Kabiru Turaki, held a separate meeting at a different venue in Abuja.

The Turaki-led group also presented Certificates of Return to candidates elected under its own structure, creating a situation in which competing factions are recognizing different party officials and candidates.

Speaking during the event, Turaki reportedly instructed recipients of the certificates to sign undertakings committing them to remain in the PDP if elected. According to him, the pledge would be required before candidates’ names are forwarded to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The parallel meetings underscore the continuing struggle for control of the PDP following months of disagreements over party leadership, internal reforms, and strategic direction.

Political analysts believe the emergence of rival NEC meetings could complicate the party’s preparations for the 2027 elections, especially if disputes over legitimate leadership structures remain unresolved.

The situation may also raise legal and electoral questions regarding which faction possesses the authority to submit candidates, make official party decisions, and represent the PDP before INEC.

As the crisis unfolds, party members and observers are watching closely to see whether reconciliation efforts can bridge the divide or whether the competing factions will continue operating independently as the election cycle gathers momentum.
