A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) aligned with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has announced former Cross River State governorship candidate, Senator Sandy Onor, as its consensus presidential candidate for the 2027 general election.

The announcement was made on Tuesday at the PDP national secretariat, Wadata Plaza, Abuja, during the presentation of results from the faction’s presidential primary process.

Former Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom, who chaired the PDP Presidential Primaries Collation Committee, formally declared Onor as the faction’s presidential candidate.

According to the committee, Senator Onor emerged as the sole aspirant after obtaining the party’s expression of interest and nomination forms earlier this month.

Committee members said consultations were held across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory before arriving at a consensus decision.

“We engaged party members across the country and arrived at a consensus ahead of this announcement,” Ortom reportedly stated during the exercise.

Following the declaration, Onor was presented with a certificate of return and the party’s flag.

INEC Officials Present

Reports indicated that officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), including National Commissioners Abdullahi Zuru and Prof. Rhoda Habor Gumus, monitored the exercise at the venue.

Growing PDP Internal Division

The development further highlights the deepening internal divisions within the PDP ahead of the 2027 elections, with multiple factions laying claim to party leadership and political direction.

The faction that produced Onor is widely seen as being loyal to Wike, who has remained influential within sections of the PDP despite serving in President Bola Tinubu’s APC-led administration as FCT Minister.

As of the time of filing this report, other PDP factions had not officially reacted to the announcement.
