The Chairman and CEO of Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has revealed that as many as or more than 5,000 Nigerian women are stranded in Iraq. She made this known recently in Lagos at a seminar tagged “Sensitisation and Advocacy Program for Promoting Diaspora Investment Potentials in South-West Nigeria,” organized by NIDCOM in collaboration with G-Consulting International Services Limited.

She stated that most of the women traveled to Iraq to work as caregivers, but on reaching their destination, the conditions there were not what they had expected.

The head of NIDCOM informed the seminar attendees that Nigeria offers a wealth of chances and discouraged migration in search of better prospects. “There are around 5,000 women stranded in Iraq as I speak with you today,” she stated. Just last week, I handled a case. To provide care, a husband dispatched his wife to Iraq.

She has passed away. Can you imagine? How can the body be brought back now? The husband is bothered by that. He is unsure about where to begin. Therefore, we had to step in. Intervention by the Nigerian High Commission has proved successful. She simply passed away inexplicably while serving as a caretaker, therefore they would perform an autopsy to determine how she died.

Simultaneously, Dabiri-Erewa stated that the seminar’s goal is to encourage Nigerians to examine themselves and seize the many opportunities that exist in their nation. During the seminar, the Group Managing Director of G-Consulting announced that his company has allocated $100 million to assist attendees who are interested in launching a business or collaborating with diaspora members.
