Activist Omoyele Sowore Accuses DStv Nigeria of Treating Customers with Disregard Over Poor Receipt and Record-Keeping Practices
Prominent human rights activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has sharply criticized DStv Nigeria, accusing the pay-TV provider of showing “utter disregard” for its Nigerian subscribers by failing to issue proper receipts or maintain accurate address-linked records for payments.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday, April 19, 2026, Sowore highlighted the disparity in service standards, noting that such practices would not be tolerated in the company’s home market of South Africa. He argued that customers who pay for services without receiving a valid receipt should be entitled to a refund, questioning why Nigerians are treated differently.

DStvNg treat their Nigerian customers with utter disregard? You pay for their services and they don’t even issue a proper receipt or keep accurate records tied to your address.  Yet, in other countries, especially in South Africa, that kind of behavior wouldn’t fly.
If you pay for a service and you’re not given a valid receipt, you’re entitled to a refund. Why should Nigerians be treated any differently?” Sowore wrote.
The post, which has garnered over 3,400 likes, 1,000 reposts, and more than 110,000 views within hours, included hashtags such as #OccupyMTN, #TakeItBack, and #AACOurParty, linking the issue to broader calls for consumer accountability and his African Action Congress (AAC) advocacy.
Sowore’s criticism resonates with longstanding complaints from Nigerian subscribers about Multichoice’s DStv operations. Similar issues, including delayed activations, uncredited payments despite proof of transaction, and poor customer service, have been reported in recent years.
For instance, in early 2025, a Jos-based customer claimed DStv failed to activate a subscription nearly 11 weeks after payment, despite providing bank confirmation. Many users replying to Sowore extended the criticism to other telecom and service providers, particularly MTN Nigeria, citing data depletion, poor service quality, and perceived exploitation enabled by weak regulatory oversight and lax consumer protections in Nigeria.
As of the time of this report, DStv Nigeria had not issued an official response to Sowore’s specific allegations. Consumers experiencing billing or receipt issues are advised to document payments meticulously and escalate complaints through official channels or relevant regulatory bodies like the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) or the Consumer Protection Council. The outcry underscores wider debates on corporate accountability, consumer rights, and the need for stronger regulatory frameworks to protect Nigerian customers from differential treatment by multinational firms.
