Aragbiji Denies Involvement In Ogunwale Ouster Tied To Oyetola

The Aragbiji of Iragbiji, Abdur-Rasheed Olabomi, has dismissed widespread claims suggesting that he removed former Osun Central Senator, Felix Ogunwale, as the Asiwaju of Iragbiji to pave the way for the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Gboyega Oyetola. Addressing his subjects in a video statement, the monarch described the reports as false and misleading.

He clarified that Senator Ogunwale voluntarily stepped down from the prestigious chieftaincy position, stressing that no force or directive led to his exit.

According to Oba Olabomi, the title of Asiwaju of Iragbiji is currently vacant, and there are no immediate plans to appoint a successor. He emphasized that the traditional institution remains committed to due process and will only make such decisions at the appropriate time.

The monarch strongly refuted allegations that the vacancy was orchestrated to favor Oyetola, a former governor of Osun State. He noted that contrary to public speculation, Oyetola has shown no interest in acquiring the Asiwaju title.

Oba Olabomi further revealed that he had already honored Oyetola with a separate chieftaincy title as far back as 2008. However, the minister reportedly chose to keep the recognition private, indicating his preference to avoid public attention over the matter.

“The position of Asiwaju of Iragbiji is vacant, but we are not ready to install anybody into that role at this time,” the monarch stated. He reiterated that Senator Ogunwale personally relinquished the title, adding that any claims of removal are entirely unfounded.

The clarification comes amid growing rumors within political and traditional circles, where speculation had intensified over the alleged replacement of Ogunwale with Oyetola. Observers had linked the situation to political alignments and influence within Osun State.

However, the Aragbiji’s statement seeks to put an end to the controversy by reaffirming the independence of the traditional institution. He stressed that chieftaincy decisions are not influenced by political considerations but are guided by customs, traditions, and the wishes of the individuals involved.

Oba Olabomi also disclosed that while Oyetola has received a chieftaincy appointment letter, the final traditional rites associated with the honor are yet to be completed. He clarified that the title conferred on the minister is entirely different from the Asiwaju position.

The development highlights the delicate balance between traditional authority and political narratives in Nigeria, where chieftaincy titles often carry both cultural and social significance. By addressing the issue publicly, the Aragbiji aims to preserve the integrity of the Iragbiji traditional system and prevent further misinformation.

As the situation stands, the Asiwaju title remains open, with no immediate plans for succession. The monarch’s firm stance underscores the importance of transparency and accuracy in matters concerning cultural heritage and leadership.
