“Be comfortable with quiet greatness.”

In 2008, Manchester United conquered Europe, the Champions League and the Premier League. But the highlight reel often stops at Ronaldo’s headers. Yet those who were truly watching know:
– Paul Scholes dictated tempo.
– Ji-Sung Park, who didn’t make the final, was instrumental every minute of both legs in the quarter-final win over Roma and the semi-final triumph against Barcelona. He played as if he had no lungs. Patrice Evra once said Park was “the most important player in big games.” He didn’t chase fame. He chased function and helped build a legacy.

From where I stand in civic work, I’ve learned this: Just like J. S. Park, you won’t always trend. But if you show up, study the terrain, and do the hard and right things quietly, you win the long game. True impact is often quiet, even thankless at first. And yes, the urge to be seen, awarded, or tagged is real. But when your work holds value, visibility follows. Let purpose define your path, not public validation.

Please note: most of the loud applause (not all) isn’t genuine, and even the genuine ones are short-lived. I have seen situations where the OGs of civic space told someone, “You’re doing a great work and you are doing well”, and the moment the person turned, it was destructive criticism. My uncomfortable and disappointed self just left the place.

So, my fellow #YoungCivicProfessional:
Don’t mistake silence for insignificance.
Don’t confuse applause with impact.
Legacy isn’t loud — it’s consistent.

Hold the line. Play your part. Let the results speak.
Build. Serve. Learn. Your growth isn’t in the spotlight, it’s in the soil.
