The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared winners in several federal and state constituency by-elections conducted across Nigeria, with the All Progressives Congress (APC) recording sweeping victories in most contests while the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) secured a major win in Rivers State.

The by-elections, held on Saturday to fill vacancies created by deaths, appointments, and other political developments, tested the strength of political parties ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The APC emerged victorious in key senatorial, federal constituency and state assembly contests in Ondo, Enugu, Kano and Kebbi states, while the PDP retained the Rivers South-East Senatorial District seat.

One of the most notable victories for the APC came in Ondo State, where Professor Dayo Faduyile won the Ondo South Senatorial District by-election with 68,474 votes.

INEC Returning Officer, Professor Gbenga Solomon Ibileye, announced the result at the collation centre in Okitipupa, stating that Faduyile defeated his closest challenger, Adeolu Akinwunmi of the Allied People’s Movement (APM), who polled 1,411 votes.

The election was conducted following the appointment of former Senator Jimoh Ibrahim as Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations.

In Enugu State, APC candidate Ikeje Asogwa recorded a commanding victory in the Enugu North Senatorial District by-election. Asogwa secured 162,360 votes, defeating PDP candidate Chief Nestor Ezeme, who garnered 9,299 votes.

The seat became vacant after the death of Senator Okey Ezea in November 2025.

Similarly, in Kano State, APC candidate Rabiu Shuaibu won the Dawakin Kudu/Warawa Federal Constituency by-election with 35,356 votes. His closest rivals, Lawal Garba Haruna of the APM and Abubakar Yahaya-Muhammad of the Labour Party (LP), secured 268 and 98 votes respectively.

The by-election followed the death of the constituency’s former representative, Muhammad Danjuma-Hassan of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).

In Kebbi State, APC candidate Rabiu Garba Aiki retained the Zuru State Constituency seat in the State House of Assembly after polling 4,887 votes. Labour Party candidate Aliyu Galadima Muhammad trailed with 168 votes.

The election was held to fill the vacancy created by the death of former Speaker of the Kebbi State House of Assembly, Muhammad Usman Zuru.

PDP Retains Rivers South-East Seat

Despite APC’s dominance across several states, the PDP recorded a resounding victory in Rivers State.

Olaka Nwogu of the PDP won the Rivers South-East Senatorial District by-election with 47,961 votes, defeating APC candidate Osar Erewari, who received 1,647 votes.

The Action Alliance finished third with 1,175 votes, while the Labour Party secured 367 votes.

The election was conducted to replace Senator Barry Mpigi, who passed away earlier this year.

Political observers described Nwogu’s victory as one of the most decisive outcomes of the by-election cycle.

INEC Reviews Electoral Process

Speaking after the Ondo election, INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mutiu Agboke, described the by-elections as an important rehearsal ahead of the 2027 general elections.

According to him, lessons learned from the exercise would help the commission improve future electoral processes.

He noted that despite minor operational challenges, the elections were generally peaceful and reflected the will of voters.

Meanwhile, the result of the Nasarawa North Senatorial District by-election had not been announced at the time of filing this report.

The election is being conducted across Nasarawa Eggon, Akwanga and Wamba local government areas to fill the vacancy left by the late Senator Godiya Akwashiki.

The by-election results are expected to influence political calculations as parties begin preparations for the 2027 general elections, with the APC seeking to consolidate its growing influence while opposition parties work to strengthen their electoral base across the country.
