Ado Ekiti, Nigeria — Governor Biodun Oyebanji has etched his name into Ekiti State’s political history after securing a decisive re-election victory, becoming the first incumbent governor since the state’s creation in 1996 to win a consecutive second term.
The declaration of results by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in the early hours of Sunday marked the end of a long-standing political pattern that had seen every sitting governor fail in attempts to secure immediate re-election.
Professor Adenike Oladiji, the Returning Officer, announced that Oyebanji of the All Progressives Congress (APC) polled 319,224 votes to defeat his closest challenger, Wole Oluyede of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who garnered 40,543 votes. The African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate, Dare Bejide, finished third with 12,872 votes.

The victory is widely viewed as a watershed moment in Ekiti politics, where incumbents have historically struggled to maintain power beyond a single term. Former governors Adeniyi Adebayo, Ayo Fayose, Kayode Fayemi and Segun Oni all experienced political interruptions that prevented consecutive terms in office.

Political observers noted that Oyebanji’s success was built on a broad coalition of support that cut across party lines and traditional political divides.
In the months leading up to the election, the APC campaign repeatedly expressed confidence in its ability to break what it described as the state’s “second-term jinx.” Senator Cyril Fasuyi, Director-General of the governor’s campaign organisation, had publicly predicted victory, citing achievements in infrastructure, education, healthcare and agriculture.
Unlike previous election cycles marked by intense political rivalries, Oyebanji benefited from endorsements by influential figures across the political spectrum. Former Governor Kayode Fayemi openly backed his re-election bid, describing the emergence of Oyebanji as one of his most significant political achievements.
Perhaps more significantly, former Governor Ayo Fayose, a prominent PDP figure and long-time political rival of the APC in Ekiti, also predicted victory for the incumbent governor and expressed confidence in his performance.
The governor further received endorsements from traditional rulers, religious leaders and political stakeholders who praised his leadership style and developmental projects.
Among the projects frequently highlighted during the campaign were the Ekiti Agro-Allied International Cargo Airport, the Ado Ekiti Ring Road project, road infrastructure upgrades and investments in public services.
Although some claims made by the administration during the campaign attracted scrutiny, analysts said the visibility of completed and ongoing projects helped strengthen public confidence in the governor’s leadership.
The election result also underscores the APC’s growing political dominance in the South-West ahead of the 2027 general elections. Oyebanji swept all 16 local government areas of the state, recording particularly strong performances in key voting centres across Ekiti.
Speaking after his victory was announced, the governor pledged to continue governing with humility and commitment to the state’s long-term development goals.
He assured residents that his second term would focus on sustaining developmental gains and implementing policies aimed at improving the welfare of citizens.
Political analysts believe the outcome could reshape future electoral calculations in Ekiti, demonstrating that political continuity is achievable when an incumbent enjoys broad-based support and relative party unity.
For now, Oyebanji’s victory stands as one of the most significant electoral milestones in Ekiti’s democratic history, ending a political trend that had endured for nearly three decades.
