The Federal High Court sitting in Kaduna has adjourned the bail hearing of former governor Nasir El-Rufai to Wednesday, as heightened security surrounded proceedings in the high-profile corruption case.

The session, held under tight security presence, drew significant public attention due to the gravity of the charges and the political stature of the defendant. Counsel to the former governor, Ukpong Akpan, confirmed the adjournment shortly after proceedings concluded. However, he declined to provide detailed comments, citing ongoing legal work. “The hearing of the bail application has been adjourned till tomorrow,” he stated briefly.

El-Rufai is currently standing trial before Justice Rilwan M. Aikawa on a 10-count charge bordering on alleged conversion and possession of public property, as well as money laundering. The charges were filed by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), which has been leading the prosecution.

Following Tuesday’s proceedings, the former governor was escorted out of the court premises by ICPC operatives in a white Hilux vehicle, reinforcing the seriousness of the case and the strict security measures in place.

The legal battle comes after El-Rufai spent over a month in detention, a development that has attracted widespread public scrutiny. Although the court had initially scheduled March 31, 2026, for the hearing of pending applications, including bail, recent developments have shifted the timeline.

Notably, the anti-graft agency granted El-Rufai temporary release on March 27, 2026, on compassionate grounds following the passing of his mother, Hajiya Umma El-Rufai, in Cairo, Egypt. This humanitarian gesture briefly paused his detention before legal proceedings resumed.

Earlier on the same day, El-Rufai was also arraigned before a Kaduna State High Court in Kawo on separate charges. In that case, he appeared alongside Amadu Sule, facing allegations including abuse of office, fraud, intent to commit fraud, and conferring undue advantage.

Despite being filed by the same anti-corruption agency, the charges at the state level are distinct from those before the Federal High Court. After the state court proceedings, El-Rufai was transferred within the same court complex for the continuation of his federal case.

Legal analysts note that the dual proceedings could complicate the former governor’s defense strategy, as he navigates multiple charges across different courts. The adjournment of the bail hearing adds another layer of uncertainty to his immediate legal standing.
