A Federal High Court in Abuja has sentenced former Acting Accountant-General of the Federation, Anamekwe Nwabuoku, to a cumulative 72 years in prison over a ₦868 million fraud case.
Delivering judgment on Monday, Justice James Omotosho ruled that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) successfully proved its case of money laundering against Nwabuoku beyond reasonable doubt.

The conviction follows his prosecution on multiple counts bordering on financial misappropriation and laundering of public funds. The court found that the former top government official abused his position to divert substantial sums for personal use.
Although the total sentence amounts to 72 years, it is typical in such cases for terms to run concurrently, meaning the actual time to be served may be significantly less, depending on the court’s directive.
The ruling marks another high-profile conviction in Nigeria’s ongoing anti-corruption drive, reinforcing the EFCC’s push to hold public officials accountable for financial crimes.
