The outgoing Resident Electoral Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Osun State, Dr. Mutiu Agboke, has delivered a strong message on electoral integrity as he officially hands over duties following his redeployment.
Speaking during his farewell address in Osogbo, Agboke charged staff of the commission to remain committed to ensuring that the will of the electorate determines the outcome of elections. He emphasized that any deviation from this principle would undermine democratic values and weaken public trust in the electoral process.
Agboke warned against allowing external influences to compromise their responsibilities, urging officials to resist any form of manipulation or misconduct. According to him, the credibility of elections depends largely on the professionalism and ethical conduct of those entrusted with managing the process.
Agboke Highlights Electoral Ethics and Accountability
The outgoing commissioner stressed that voters must always be assured that their votes count, noting that INEC was established by law to uphold that fundamental principle. He cautioned that any alternative factors influencing election outcomes would not only be harmful to democracy but could also deepen voter apathy across the country.
“I leave you all to uphold the ethics of your profession,” he said, urging staff to remain steadfast regardless of pressure. He also warned that those who allow others to use them for unethical purposes may ultimately face the consequences alone.
Reflecting on his leadership, Agboke acknowledged that his colleagues perceived his style in varying ways. While some considered him strict and others lenient, he explained that his approach was always driven by a commitment to instill discipline and adherence to due process.
He reiterated his unwavering stance on transparency, stating that even if provided another opportunity, he would maintain the same principles centered on fairness and accountability. According to him, adherence to due process should always guide the conduct of electoral officials.
Agboke expressed gratitude to the staff for their cooperation and dedication during his tenure, describing them as one of the best teams he had worked with since joining the commission. He also appreciated stakeholders for their contributions, noting that collaboration remains key to achieving credible elections.
The Administrative Secretary of INEC in Osun State, Mrs. Victoria Temitayo Adelusi, praised Agboke’s leadership, describing him as a transformative administrator. She highlighted his impact on the commission’s performance, particularly in the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise.
According to her, Osun State consistently ranked among the top performers nationwide in voter registration during his tenure, a feat she attributed to his strong work ethic and dedication to excellence.
Adelusi noted that the commission would miss his presence but would continue to build on the legacy he established. She wished him success in his new assignment and reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to maintaining high standards in electoral administration.
Agboke, who assumed office in November 2022, has now been redeployed to Ondo State. His departure marks the end of a notable chapter in Osun’s electoral administration, with expectations that his message of integrity and professionalism will continue to resonate among INEC staff.
As Nigeria continues to strengthen its democratic institutions, his farewell remarks serve as a reminder of the critical role electoral officials play in safeguarding the nation’s voting process.
