ABUJA — The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) are investigating the management and expenditure of the ₦12 billion Federal Government intervention fund released to the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) for the payment of players’ wages and bonuses.

The development followed the NFF’s refusal to provide documents requested under the Freedom of Information Act by Cromwell & Okeke, a law firm seeking details of how the intervention fund was managed and spent. In a letter dated August 18, 2026, and signed by Onoja Joshua, Esq., on behalf of the NFF General Secretary, the federation said the requested records were currently with the EFCC and ICPC as part of ongoing investigations.

The law firm had submitted its request on August 7, seeking access to financial statements, utilisation logs and other documents relating to the ₦12 billion intervention. The NFF said it received the request on August 11 but could not release the records because the matter was already under investigation by the two anti-corruption agencies.

NFF: Documents Now With EFCC, ICPC

In the letter referenced NFF/LEG/10/1/879 and titled “Re: Application for disclosure of financial records and utilisation logs regarding the N12 billion Federal Government Intervention Fund released for players’ wages and bonuses,” the federation explained its position.

The NFF stated: “It is my instruction to inform you that the subject matter of the request under the Freedom of Information Act is subject to investigations by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).”

The football federation further disclosed that it no longer had possession of the documents requested by the law firm.

It added: “Therefore, all documents relating to the request are before the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).”

The development places the management of the ₦12 billion intervention fund under scrutiny by Nigeria’s two major anti-corruption agencies. The exact scope of the investigations and whether any wrongdoing has been established were not disclosed in the information available.

The investigation does not by itself establish guilt or financial misconduct by the NFF or any individual.
