Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi, Urges Peace Amidst Leadership Dispute

The Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, has called on residents of the state to uphold peace and abide by the law to maintain stability in the region. His appeal comes amid the ongoing tussle over the emirship, which has divided the ancient city.

Speaking at a special Iftar (breaking of fast) at his palace on Sunday, Sanusi strongly condemned those opposing his reinstatement, declaring that “fire would consume those inciting unrest in the city.” He emphasized that resistance to his rule was a defiance of God’s will and warned of the consequences for those challenging what he described as a divinely ordained event.

Sanusi’s remarks have sparked further debate as the state grapples with tensions surrounding the emirship, which has been a contentious issue since his reinstatement in May 2024.

Sanusi Calls for Peace Amid Emirship Controversy

Addressing a gathering in Hausa, Sanusi urged the people of Kano to remain patient and prayerful while refraining from actions that could escalate tensions. He stated:

“We urge everyone to maintain peace. This issue is beyond us; it is about God’s will, and He needs no one’s assistance. Let us be patient and continue praying, for God will always support those on the right path.

“May fire consume anyone seeking to cause trouble in Kano. May Allah protect us and our community from all evil. Let us remain peaceful and steadfast in prayer.

“Whoever challenges God’s judgment will never succeed,” he added.

His comments reflect his firm stance against individuals and groups who continue to oppose his return to the throne. While Sanusi has called for peace, his words have also been interpreted as a warning to his detractors.

Kano State Government Orders Sallah Durbar Preparations

Sanusi’s appeal for peace came shortly after Governor Abba Yusuf directed the four emirates in Kano to commence preparations for the Sallah Durbar, a traditional festival held during Eid celebrations.

The governor’s directive is aimed at ensuring that citizens and visitors enjoy the festive period to the fullest, despite the ongoing tensions. The Sallah Durbar is an important cultural event in Kano, marked by colorful horse-riding processions, royal displays, and festivities attended by dignitaries from across the country.

However, the order for Durbar preparations has added another layer of complexity to the ongoing emirship battle. Shortly after the governor’s announcement, the deposed Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero, notified security agencies of his plans to hold a Durbar event and commemorate his fifth year as the city’s monarch.

This move has fueled speculation that Bayero and his supporters may be preparing to challenge Sanusi’s authority once again.

A Prolonged Emirship Dispute

The leadership crisis in Kano has lasted for months, creating political and social tensions across the state. The issue dates back to 2014, when Muhammadu Sanusi II was first appointed Emir of Kano following the death of his predecessor, Ado Bayero.

However, in 2020, Sanusi was deposed by the then-Governor of Kano, Abdullahi Ganduje, after a series of political disagreements. He was replaced by Aminu Ado Bayero, the son of the late Emir Ado Bayero.

Four years later, in May 2024, the Kano State government, under Governor Abba Yusuf, reinstated Sanusi II as Emir. This decision was backed by a Kano High Court ruling, which restrained Aminu Ado Bayero from parading himself as the Emir of Kano.

Since then, tensions have remained high, with Sanusi’s supporters celebrating his return while Bayero’s camp continues to challenge his legitimacy.

Reactions from the Public and Political Stakeholders

Sanusi’s call for peace has been met with mixed reactions. While some residents and political observers agree with his appeal for calm, others believe his strong words may further inflame tensions.

A Kano-based political analyst, Dr. Ibrahim Sani, commented on the situation, saying:

“The Emir’s call for peace is commendable, but the choice of words is important. When he says, ‘fire will consume those who incite unrest,’ some people might interpret that as a threat. Leaders must be careful with their statements, especially in a volatile situation like this.”

Others argue that Sanusi’s reinstatement is a correction of past injustices and that his critics should respect the decision of the government and the courts.

Alhaji Musa Bello, a resident of Kano, expressed support for Sanusi, saying:

“Sanusi is our rightful Emir, and we are happy to have him back. Those opposing him should accept God’s will and move on. We need peace in Kano, and the Emir is correct in asking for stability.”

On the other hand, some supporters of Aminu Ado Bayero believe that the removal of their leader was politically motivated. A youth leader from the Bayero faction, who requested anonymity, stated:

“This is not about God’s will; this is about politics. Aminu Ado Bayero was lawfully appointed in 2020, and removing him was an injustice. We will continue to demand our rights peacefully.”

What Lies Ahead?

The leadership dispute in Kano remains unresolved, and tensions could escalate as both factions prepare for the upcoming Sallah Durbar celebrations. The government’s directive for emirates to hold Durbar festivities, combined with Bayero’s independent Durbar plans, raises concerns over potential clashes between supporters of both camps.

Authorities and security agencies in Kano must ensure that these events proceed peacefully to prevent further unrest. Political and traditional leaders must also engage in dialogue to find a lasting resolution to the emirship dispute.

For now, all eyes remain on Kano as the state navigates this delicate period in its history. The Emir’s message of peace and patience will be tested in the coming weeks as events unfold.

Muhammadu Sanusi II’s reinstatement as Emir of Kano continues to be a controversial issue, with strong opposition from supporters of Aminu Ado Bayero. While Sanusi has urged peace and patience, the leadership battle remains unresolved.

With the Sallah Durbar approaching, tensions are expected to rise, making it crucial for state authorities, security agencies, and traditional leaders to prevent any potential clashes. The people of Kano, who have a rich history of traditional leadership, deserve stability and unity.

As the emirship battle continues, the hope remains that wisdom and diplomacy will prevail over conflict, ensuring that Kano moves forward in peace and progress.
