The Presidency has described the recent letter from United States President Donald Trump to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as evidence that the Federal Government is making measurable progress in addressing terrorism, insecurity and governance in Nigeria.

The reaction followed a letter dated July 6, 2026, in which President Trump commended Tinubu’s leadership in confronting terrorism and violence affecting Christian communities while reaffirming the United States’ commitment to supporting Nigeria’s counter-terrorism efforts and strengthening bilateral security cooperation.

Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Wednesday, the Special Adviser to the President on Policy Communications, Daniel Bwala, said the letter serves as further validation of the administration’s achievements in the security sector.

“Fact speaks for itself. That’s what it is. The letter is further proof of the progress we are making,” Bwala said.

He stressed that while the commendation from the United States was encouraging, Nigeria’s commitment to combating insecurity would not depend on external recognition.

“Does it mean if there was no letter, we will stop? No. Because we are already engaging and communicating with them,” he stated.

Bwala likened the diplomatic exchange between the two leaders to words of encouragement shared in a relationship, saying such gestures strengthen ongoing commitments without changing the underlying objective.

“If you are in a relationship with a lady, and then because of the relationship, you write a letter encouraging her, or she writes a letter encouraging you, then you feel further strengthened but it does not stop your commitment,” he added.

In the letter released earlier by the Presidency through the Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Trump praised Tinubu’s “decisive leadership” in tackling terrorism and reaffirmed Washington’s readiness to continue supporting Nigeria through enhanced security cooperation under the US-Nigeria 2026 Defence Cooperation Roadmap.

The Presidency maintains that the growing collaboration between Nigeria and the United States reflects increasing international confidence in the Tinubu administration’s efforts to improve national security and combat terrorism.
