The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) chapter of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has officially suspended its strike action after a major financial intervention by the Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike. The decision brings relief to thousands of students and parents affected by the disruption of academic activities across public schools.
The State Wing Executive Council (SWEC) Chairman, Abdullahi Shafa, announced the development during a press briefing held in Gwagwalada, Abuja. He explained that the suspension followed an emergency meeting convened to evaluate the government’s response to the union’s demands.

The strike, which began on April 20, 2026, had paralyzed learning in primary and secondary schools, with teachers protesting unresolved welfare issues and outstanding entitlements. However, the union has now agreed to halt the industrial action after reviewing fresh commitments made by the FCT administration.

Central to the resolution is a ₦5 billion monthly financial package approved by Minister Nyesom Wike. According to Shafa, the intervention includes ₦2 billion sourced from the FCT’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) and an additional ₦3 billion drawn from 10 percent of the IGR allocated to Area Councils.
The funds are earmarked for implementing a 40 percent particular allowance for primary school teachers and clearing outstanding financial obligations owed to them. Union leaders described the move as a significant step toward addressing long-standing grievances within the education sector.
Beyond immediate financial relief, the minister also pledged to tackle career stagnation issues affecting teachers. Shafa revealed that Wike has committed to engaging the Chairman of the FCT Civil Service Commission to resolve promotion-related concerns.
The proposed reforms include eliminating the vacancy requirement that has hindered teacher promotions and revisiting the 2024 promotion exercise to ensure fairness and transparency.
Following these developments, the union has directed all affected teachers to return to their classrooms. “Arising from the stakeholders’ resolution, all FCT primary and secondary school teachers are to resume duties on Monday, April 27,” Shafa confirmed.
He also issued a strong warning against any form of victimization of teachers who participated in the strike. The union emphasized that it would resist any punitive measures and continue to defend the rights of its members.
While the strike has been suspended, the NUT made it clear that its decision is conditional. The council stated that it would closely monitor the implementation of the agreed terms and may reconsider its stance if the commitments are not fulfilled.
The union leadership praised teachers for their unity and resilience throughout the industrial action, reaffirming its dedication to improving their welfare and working conditions.
With classrooms set to reopen, the suspension is expected to restore normal academic activities across the FCT, offering a fresh start for students and educators alike.
