FG flags off next phase of Lagos-Ibadan Expressway repairs, vows completion on schedule
Phase two of the Lagos-Ibadan dual carriageway’s repair, renovation, and expansion, as well as Section One of the Lagos-Sagamu Expressway, have been initiated by the Federal Government.
Underpasses at Kara, Wawa, Magboro, and Arepo, as well as flyover bridges at Kilometre 16 next to the Mountain of Fire Ministries (MFM) and Kilometre 37 at Makun, Sagamu, are all part of the project, which is expected to be finished in 24 months.
Five pedestrian bridges will also be built in Redemption City, Arepo, Magboro, NASFAT, and Deeper Life. This was revealed by Works Minister David Umahi as he was conducting a nationwide examination of Federal Government projects.
Umahi gave the following explanation of the project’s scope: “Phase Two consists of underpasses at Magboro, Warewa, Arepo, Sagamu, and Iperu, totaling 24 kilometers. The following stage will span 96 kilometers from Iperu to Ijebu-Ode.
Additionally, he enforced stringent adherence to financial standards, guaranteeing that no contractor is paid without a valid Performance Bond and an Advanced Payment Guarantee (APG) certificate.
The minister commended Governor Abiodun for fostering regional unity and thanked President Tinubu for his commitment to national infrastructure.
He restated the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda’s commitment to finishing the several ongoing road projects.
“The Lagos-Ibadan Expressway reconstruction represents a significant turning point in Nigeria’s infrastructure development drive with the renewed push for completion, promising improved road safety, improved connectivity, and economic growth.”
Through Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, President Bola Tinubu reaffirmed the administration’s dedication to putting road user safety first, cutting down on travel time, and promoting economic development.
“This project represents an important milestone in our dedication to infrastructure development.” It would guarantee the longevity of one of Nigeria’s busiest highways and satisfy international standards,” Tinubu said.
The president acknowledged the critical role that road infrastructure plays in the development of the national economy and commended the residents of Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Ondo, and the surrounding areas for witnessing this historic accomplishment. He also ordered contractors to speed up work and asked drivers to be patient.
Because it links Lagos to the rest of the nation, this highway is essential. “This renewed effort is a direct response to the challenges faced by road users,” he said, adding that the reconstruction had started in 2013.
Ade Akinsanya, the Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure in Ogun State, expressed gratitude to the Federal Government for including footbridges in the project and pledged cooperation to guarantee its prompt completion.
Babatunde Ajayi, the Akarigbo and supreme ruler of Remo Land, had already urged the government to improve traffic management and reduce accidents in Sagamu and Ilisan-Ilabo by installing speed bumps or overpasses.
