A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) aligned with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has called on former President Goodluck Jonathan to publicly distance himself from reports linking him to the party’s 2027 presidential ticket.
The group described claims that Jonathan would emerge as the PDP’s presidential candidate as false and unauthorized.
In a statement issued on Friday, the faction’s National Publicity Secretary, Jungudo Haruna Mohammed, said reports suggesting that Jonathan would be unveiled as the party’s candidate were aimed at creating confusion and political tension.

The statement reportedly followed claims circulating within another PDP faction that Jonathan would be formally presented as the party’s presidential candidate during a planned political event.
However, the Wike-aligned faction insisted that no such process had been approved by any recognised organ of the party.

According to the statement, the PDP has already completed all its primary elections, including those for governorship, State House of Assembly, National Assembly, and presidential positions.
The faction maintained that the exercises were conducted in accordance with the Electoral Act, guidelines of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and the party’s constitution.
“The Party wishes to categorically state that no such convention, meeting, or process has been scheduled, approved, or endorsed,” the statement said.
The group further stressed that all recognized party activities had already been concluded under proper supervision.
The faction urged Jonathan to publicly reject any attempt to associate him with what it described as an unauthorized political process.
According to the statement, such clarification would help protect both the integrity of the democratic process and the former president’s political reputation.
The group argued that false claims surrounding the 2027 election could deepen divisions within the opposition party and create unnecessary political instability.
The faction also called on security agencies to investigate the origin of the reports and identify individuals responsible for spreading what it described as misinformation.
It warned that the party would no longer tolerate activities capable of damaging its image through unauthorized political announcements and false narratives.
Observers say the latest disagreement highlights the growing internal divisions within the PDP ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Political activities across major parties have intensified as alignments, endorsements, and internal rivalries continue to shape the emerging 2027 political landscape.
Within the PDP, multiple factions and competing interests have fueled speculation over possible presidential contenders and future alliances.
The latest development involving Jonathan’s name adds another layer to the ongoing struggle for influence and control within the opposition party.
