Florence Ajimobi, Nigeria’s Ambassador to Austria, has been appointed the country’s governor on the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Board of Governors for the 2026-2028 term. Her appointment follows Nigeria’s election to the board during the agency’s 70th regular session of the General Conference in Vienna, Austria.

The appointment places Ajimobi in Nigeria’s representation on the IAEA’s governing body, which plays a central role in overseeing the agency’s activities and policy direction. Nigeria’s election to the board also marks its participation in the international body responsible for promoting the peaceful use of nuclear energy and strengthening nuclear safety and security.

The development was announced in a statement following the conference, which brought together representatives of IAEA member states in Vienna. Nigeria’s election to the board provides the country with a role in discussions on the agency’s programmes, priorities and international cooperation on nuclear technology.

Ajimobi’s appointment comes as Nigeria continues its engagement with international institutions on nuclear science and technology. During her 2026-2028 tenure, she is expected to represent Nigeria in the board’s deliberations, with the appointment strengthening the country’s presence in the agency’s governance structure.
