Vehicular gridlock on the Oye-Ilupeju highway in Ekiti State has eased significantly following the completion of emergency palliative works carried out by the Federal Government.

The intervention came after the Minister of State for Works, David Umahi, issued a 48-hour ultimatum during an inspection of the failed section of the road on Tuesday. Following the directive, maintenance teams were deployed to carry out road levelling and stabilisation works aimed at restoring traffic flow.

The emergency repairs have reportedly cleared the major bottleneck, allowing commercial vehicles and other motorists to move along the important transport corridor. Residents and commuters who had endured severe traffic congestion welcomed the swift intervention while calling for a permanent solution.

“A few days ago, hundreds of trailers and heavy-duty trucks were parked on the road, blocking everywhere, but today we thank the federal government for the swift response, ensuring the damaged portion was fixed,” a resident, Gabriel Ogban, said.

The Federal Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA), however, clarified that the intervention was only a temporary measure designed to ease the immediate traffic crisis.

“We got approval from the head office in Abuja, so we moved to the site immediately,” a site engineer, Simon Adeniyi, said.

Motorists and residents have appealed to the Federal Government to move beyond the emergency repairs and undertake the complete reconstruction of the Oye-Ilupeju road to prevent a recurrence of the gridlock and ensure safer movement of goods and passengers.
