A fresh wave of political controversy has emerged as Lere Olayinka, aide to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, has launched a scathing attack on Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, accusing him of pursuing a vice-presidential ambition and making statements capable of inciting unrest.

Olayinka, who serves as Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media to Nyesom Wike, alleged that Makinde is “desperately looking” for a vice-presidential slot under the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

The remarks were shared via a post on the social media platform 𝕏, where Olayinka claimed that the governor’s recent actions stem from a perceived loss of political relevance within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

According to the aide, Makinde has struggled to maintain influence within the party and is now seeking alternative platforms to remain politically visible. He described the governor as “partyless,” alleging that his ambitions have not materialized within the PDP.

Olayinka further accused Makinde of engaging in rhetoric that could heighten political tensions, drawing comparisons to the historic “Operation Wet e” period in Nigeria’s South-West—a time associated with violent political clashes.

He warned that such statements, especially from a sitting governor, could have serious implications for public safety and stability. “I just hope he understands the gravity of inciting violence,” Olayinka stated, emphasizing the responsibility that comes with holding public office.

In addition to questioning Makinde’s political intentions, Olayinka listed several alleged failures tied to the governor’s political maneuvers. These include unsuccessful attempts to consolidate control within the PDP and involvement in disputes related to traditional leadership structures, particularly the Olubadan stool in Oyo State.

The aide also raised concerns over financial accountability, alleging that the governor has yet to provide a full account of funds reportedly received to compensate victims of the 2024 Bodija explosion. According to him, the governor had earlier indicated that unused funds might be returned but has not followed through.

Olayinka concluded by asserting that Makinde is now seeking relevance outside the PDP after failing to secure internal dominance. He also questioned the willingness of political leaders to bear personal consequences for actions that could lead to unrest, asking whether they would involve their own families in such scenarios.

As of now, Seyi Makinde has not publicly responded to the allegations. The development adds another layer of tension within Nigeria’s political landscape, particularly among key figures in the opposition space, where internal divisions continue to shape future alignments.

Observers note that such exchanges highlight ongoing struggles for influence ahead of future elections, with shifting alliances and ambitions likely to redefine the political terrain in the months to come.
