A Federal High Court has scheduled May 18, 2026, for the trial of a man accused of calling for a military coup against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The defendant is alleged to have made public statements and circulated messages urging the Nigerian military to overthrow the current administration, an action authorities say violates the nation’s laws and threatens democratic governance.

During the latest court sitting, the judge fixed the trial date after reviewing preliminary submissions from both the prosecution and the defence. The prosecution informed the court that it had gathered evidence, including digital records and witness testimonies, which it intends to present during the trial.
According to prosecutors, the accused used online platforms and other communication channels to make statements that could incite the military and members of the public against the elected government.
The defence counsel, however, is expected to challenge the allegations, arguing that the statements attributed to the defendant may fall within the scope of freedom of expression or were taken out of context.
Legal experts note that calls for a coup are treated as serious offences in Nigeria, as the country operates under a democratic constitution that criminalizes attempts to undermine or overthrow a legally elected government.
The case has attracted public attention amid ongoing discussions about political expression, national security, and the limits of free speech in Nigeria.
The court adjourned the matter to May 18, 2026, when the trial is expected to formally commence.
