The Federal Government has opened applications for the 2027 Commonwealth Master’s and PhD Scholarships, giving eligible Nigerian students an opportunity to pursue postgraduate studies in the United Kingdom.

The scholarship programme is being administered by the Federal Scholarship Board under the Federal Ministry of Education.

The ministry said prospective applicants must satisfy the academic, admission and other requirements specified for their chosen category before submitting their applications.

For the Master’s programme, candidates are required to hold a first degree with a minimum of Second Class Upper Division.

Applicants seeking admission for PhD programmes, on the other hand, must possess a relevant Master’s degree and have obtained at least Second Class Lower Division in their first degree.

Candidates in both categories must also have secured admission into at least two eligible universities or institutions in the United Kingdom.

PhD applicants face an additional requirement, as they must provide a supporting statement from a prospective supervisor at their selected UK institution.

Evidence of participation in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme is also among the conditions listed by the Federal Ministry of Education.

The Federal Government said applications for the 2027 Commonwealth scholarships would be assessed using three major criteria.

These include academic merit, the potential development impact of the proposed study after completion and the quality of the applicant’s study plan.

The ministry stated that candidates would therefore need to demonstrate not only strong academic qualifications but also how their proposed studies could contribute to Nigeria’s development.

Applicants are required to complete their submissions through the Electronic Application System (EAS).

The application process begins with registration on the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission’s electronic application portal, after which candidates are expected to complete the relevant online application form.

Applicants must upload scanned copies of required documents, including passport photographs, university academic transcripts, birth certificates and admission letters from UK institutions listed in their applications.

The Federal Government set October 20, 2026, as the deadline for the submission of completed applications.

Candidates are expected to carefully review their submissions before the deadline to ensure that all required information and supporting documents have been provided.

Following the online submission, applicants must also create a PDF copy of their completed application form.

The PDF version is to be downloaded and printed, with one hard copy to be submitted at the designated interview venue as required under the application process.

The ministry further warned that applicants presenting certificates obtained outside Nigeria must provide official translation and evaluation documents where applicable.

Prospective scholars have also been advised to pay close attention to Nigeria’s development priorities when preparing their proposed study plans.

The Federal Ministry of Education listed several priority areas that applicants may consider when developing their research or study proposals.

These include education, healthcare, economic growth and the private sector, governance and conflict, climate and environmental issues, water and sanitation, engineering, science and technology.

Other priority areas highlighted by the ministry are food and nutrition, as well as humanitarian disasters and emergencies.

The government encouraged prospective candidates to ensure that their proposed courses of study are relevant to Nigeria’s developmental needs.

The emphasis on development impact means applicants should clearly demonstrate how the knowledge and expertise they intend to acquire could be applied to address challenges in Nigeria.

The Commonwealth scholarships are therefore being presented as an opportunity for qualified Nigerian students to obtain advanced education in the UK while developing skills that could contribute to national development.

Eligible candidates are encouraged to begin their applications early, obtain the necessary admission documentation and ensure that all requirements are met before the October 20, 2026 deadline.
