Keisha Lance Bottoms Makes History as First Black Woman Elected US State Governor
Democrat Keisha Lance Bottoms has made history as the first Black woman elected governor of a US state following her projected victory in Georgia’s gubernatorial election, according to US media projections.
Naija News reports that Bottoms, a former mayor of Atlanta, defeated Republican businessman Rick Jackson in Tuesday’s election, ending more than two decades of Republican control of Georgia’s governorship. Her victory represents a significant breakthrough for Democrats in one of America’s closely contested political states.

The 56-year-old will succeed Republican Governor Brian Kemp, who is leaving office after serving two consecutive terms. Her emergence will also make her Georgia’s first female governor, marking another milestone in the state’s political history and the representation of women in American leadership.
Beyond her political career in Georgia, Bottoms previously served as a senior adviser to former US President Joe Biden and director of the White House Office of Public Engagement. Her victory comes amid growing political representation of Black women, who have played influential roles in American electoral politics despite remaining underrepresented in top elected positions.
Bottoms’ historic achievement came on the same night Stacey Plaskett was elected governor of the US Virgin Islands, becoming the first Black woman to lead the US territory. Meanwhile, Republican Congressman Byron Donalds also won Florida’s governorship, making him the first Black Republican elected governor in the United States.
Republicans had maintained control of Georgia’s governorship for more than two decades before Bottoms’ victory. Her opponent, Jackson, a billionaire businessman and founder of Jackson Healthcare, had campaigned on promises of tax cuts, improved public safety and reduced government regulation.
Bottoms’ emergence also follows the political influence of fellow Democrat Stacey Abrams, who became the first Black woman nominated for Georgia governor by a major political party in 2018. Although Abrams lost the 2018 and 2022 elections, her campaigns helped expand Democratic voter participation and strengthen the party’s political presence in the state.
