The National Assembly has postponed the resumption of plenary by senators and members of the House of Representatives from September 15 to September 29, 2026.

The new resumption date was announced by the Clerk to the National Assembly, Kamoru Ogunlana, in a statement issued on Wednesday.

According to the statement, the postponement was approved by the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas.

The Clerk explained that the decision was necessary to allow ongoing rehabilitation work in the two chambers of the National Assembly to be completed before lawmakers return for plenary.

“The National Assembly has shifted its resumption of plenary session from Tuesday, 15th September to Tuesday, 29th September, 2026,” the statement said.

The statement added that the postponement was directed by the presiding officers of both chambers to provide sufficient time for the completion of the rehabilitation works.

“This postponement, as directed by the President of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, is to allow for the completion of the ongoing rehabilitation work in the two chambers,” Ogunlana stated.

The Clerk advised senators and members of the House of Representatives to take note of the new date and make the necessary adjustments to their legislative engagements and schedules.

Lawmakers Extend Annual Recess

The lawmakers had proceeded on their annual legislative recess on July 23, 2026, after the Senate adjourned plenary to enable members to embark on the break.

They were initially scheduled to resume plenary on September 15, but the date has now been moved by two weeks.

The National Assembly’s two chambers are expected to resume plenary on Tuesday, September 29, subject to the completion of the ongoing rehabilitation work.
