The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has introduced a new procedure that allows international visitors to temporarily bring their personal vehicles into Nigeria, a move aimed at easing travel, promoting tourism, and facilitating cross-border business activities.

Under the arrangement, eligible visitors can import their vehicles into the country for a limited period without paying full import duties, provided the vehicles are re-exported within the approved timeframe. The initiative aligns Nigeria with international best practices on temporary vehicle admission, commonly known as a Temporary Importation Permit (TIP).

According to the NCS, the policy is designed for tourists, business travelers, expatriates, and participants in international events who wish to use their personal vehicles while in Nigeria. Customs officials emphasized that the vehicles must be strictly for personal use and not sold, hired, or transferred while in the country.

The Service noted that applicants will be required to meet specific conditions, including proper documentation of vehicle ownership, valid travel documents, and a commitment to re-export the vehicle before the permit expires. Failure to comply may attract penalties, including payment of full customs duties and other sanctions.

The NCS described the initiative as part of broader reforms to modernize customs operations, improve ease of doing business, and enhance Nigeria’s image as a welcoming destination for international visitors, while still safeguarding national revenue and border security.
