Nigerian Army Reaffirms Commitment to Secularism Amid Viral Misleading Claims

In response to a recent viral video alleging religious favoritism, the Nigerian Army has firmly reiterated its commitment to professionalism, secularism, and religious inclusivity. The Army emphasized that it remains a non-religious institution dedicated to safeguarding the nation’s territorial integrity while respecting the religious rights of all its personnel.
The viral video, which sparked heated debate across social platforms, falsely claimed that the establishment of the Nigerian Army School of Islamic Affairs was part of a broader agenda to Islamize the Nigerian military. The video went further to draw flawed comparisons with countries like Turkey and Libya, alleging that similar moves in those nations led to prolonged instability.
In a comprehensive response issued by the Army Headquarters, the Nigerian Army categorically refuted these allegations. It described the claims as not only baseless but also an attempt to incite religious tension within the ranks of the military and among the public.

Firm Stand on Secularism and Religious Inclusivity
The Army clarified that it is constitutionally guided and proudly operates as a secular institution within a multi-religious society. The statement emphasized that the establishment of the Nigerian Army School of Islamic Affairs in NA Cantonment, Ikeja, Lagos, does not represent a deviation from secular values. Instead, it is part of a broader framework designed to support the spiritual needs of Muslim personnel.
Equally significant is the Army’s inclusion of other faith-based training institutions, such as the Nigerian Army Protestant Training School in Yaba and the Nigerian Army Chaplain Catholic Training School in Ojo Cantonment. These institutions function to train clergy and religious officers who cater to the respective religious needs of soldiers, fostering an environment where faith and duty can coexist peacefully.
The Army noted that these religious training centers are a testament to its commitment to diversity and interfaith harmony. According to the statement, the schools also engage in regular interfaith collaborations, reinforcing unity and morale among personnel from various religious backgrounds.
“The Nigerian Army is a secular organization that upholds the principle of religious freedom for all its personnel and ensures that personnel irrespective of ranks is free to practice their religions without any form of bias or endorsement of a specific religion,” the statement read.
It added that soldiers are not only allowed but encouraged to freely practice their religions without fear of discrimination or exclusion. The NA emphasized that this policy fosters professionalism, psychological well-being, and a deepened sense of belonging among its members.
Public Urged to Ignore Misleading Propaganda
The Nigerian Army has called on the general public to disregard the content of the viral video, describing it as “dead on arrival.” The Army sees the video as part of a broader campaign aimed at sowing seeds of mistrust and religious intolerance within the military and the wider Nigerian society.
“The viral report also made futile effort to portray the NA as exclusively encouraging religious bigotry among its personnel. Considering the gravity of this falsehood, the NA wishes to categorically state that this propaganda in its entirety is dead on arrival as it clearly does not reflect the values of our esteemed institution,” the Army reiterated.
Furthermore, the Army urged citizens and commentators to seek verified and balanced information before sharing sensitive content that could mislead the public or undermine national unity.
Highlighting its unwavering dedication to maintaining secular values, the Army concluded that its priority remains the security of the nation and the well-being of its personnel, regardless of religious affiliation.
The NA reaffirmed that its guiding principles remain rooted in constitutionalism, equality, and respect for human rights. It stands resolute in its mission to provide a secure environment where soldiers can perform their duties while observing their religious obligations in peace and dignity.
