Tensions surrounding the reported disagreement between Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde and the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Rashidi Ladoja, have drawn the attention of prominent elders in Ibadan, who are now appealing for peace and unity.

The Balogun of Ibadanland, Tajudeen Ajibola, disclosed on Friday that respected leaders in the city have stepped in to address the situation and prevent any escalation. Speaking to journalists at his private residence in the Aladewura House area of Sanyo, located in Ibadan South West Local Government Area, Ajibola reassured residents that there is no serious conflict between the governor and the monarch.

According to him, the intervention by Ibadan elders aims to maintain harmony and uphold the long-standing traditions of the ancient city. He emphasized that the relationship between political leadership and traditional institutions must remain cordial for the overall stability of the region.

Ajibola used the opportunity to advise Oba Ladoja to distance himself from partisan politics, stressing the importance of preserving the dignity and neutrality of the traditional institution. He urged the monarch to act as a unifying figure, serving as a father to all political actors regardless of party affiliation.

“I want to allay the fears of our people that there is no crisis between Governor Makinde and His Imperial Majesty,” Ajibola stated, adding that the elders’ intervention is already yielding positive results.

The Balogun further highlighted that traditional rulers play a critical role in fostering peace and guiding political leaders, especially during periods of tension. He noted that maintaining neutrality strengthens public trust in the institution and prevents unnecessary divisions among the people.

Observers say the call for calm comes amid growing public concern over perceived friction between political and traditional authorities in the state. However, the swift involvement of Ibadan elders signals a collective commitment to resolving issues through dialogue and mutual respect.

As mediation efforts continue, stakeholders are hopeful that the situation will not only be resolved amicably but also reinforce cooperation between government officials and traditional leaders in Oyo State.
