Nigerian Army Renames Ikeja Cantonment After Late COAS Taoreed Lagbaja
The Ikeja cantonment has been renamed by the Nigerian Army in honor of the late Taoreed Lagbaja, the Chief of Army Staff (CAOS).
The renaming event came after the cantonment underwent facility improvements, which included digital boards, a renovated commander 9 brigade quarters, and an etched image of Lagbaja constructed with more than 4,000 nails in front of the renovated main entrance.

Speaking at the renaming ceremony on Friday, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu said it is more than simply a title; it is a symbol of respect, thanks, and acknowledgment of Lagbaja’s bravery and contribution to Nigeria, according to Naija News.
Sanwo-Olu believes that Lagbaja should be honored for his outstanding three decades of service in the Nigerian Army, especially in the areas of internal security, peacekeeping, and counterinsurgency.
He stated, “This renaming is not just a new title; it represents our respect, gratitude, and recognition for the bravery and sacrifices of Lieutenant General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja, the former chief of army staff and one of Nigeria’s exceptional military officers.”
By giving it Lieutenant General Lagbaja’s name, we honor a leader whose life shown bravery, self-control, and patriotism.
“He merits credit for his outstanding three decades of service in the Nigerian Army, especially in the areas of internal security, peacekeeping, and counterinsurgency.
“I applaud the Ministry of Defense and the Nigerian Army for taking this initiative. It guarantees all patriots that their sacrifices will always be remembered and strengthens a culture of honoring and appreciating our heroes.
In a same vein, Olufemi Oluyede, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), stated that the cantonment was thought to be the most appropriate place to immortalize Lagbaja because of the infrastructure development the late COAS had started while he was in charge of 9 Brigade.
“Some of these include the restoration of the cantonment water treatment plant, the improvement of the facilities at the medical center and schools, and the extensive renovation of the accommodations for officers and soldiers,” he said.
He also played a crucial role in overcoming the cantonment’s unsolvable problem of inadequate electrical supply. The cantonment community surely felt more at ease and happier as a result of Lieutenant General Lagbaja’s significant intervention.
