The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has announced plans to commence a nationwide total strike and shut down medical services across public hospitals beginning 31st, following the Federal Government’s failure to fully implement agreements reached with the association.

In a communiqué issued after an emergency National Executive Council (NEC) meeting, the resident doctors expressed deep frustration over what they described as repeated breaches of trust by the Federal Government, particularly on issues bordering on salary adjustments, unpaid arrears, welfare packages, and improved working conditions.

According to NARD, despite several meetings and written assurances from government representatives, key demands remain unfulfilled, leaving resident doctors overworked, underpaid, and demoralised. The association warned that patience among its members has been exhausted, stressing that the planned action would be total and indefinite if the government fails to act before the deadline.

The doctors also raised concerns about the deteriorating state of public healthcare facilities, poor funding, and the continued exodus of medical professionals from the country due to unfavourable working conditions. They noted that the situation now poses a serious threat to the survival of Nigeria’s healthcare system.

NARD, however, urged the Federal Government to urgently intervene to avert the shutdown, warning that Nigerians—especially vulnerable patients—would bear the brunt if hospitals are forced to suspend services nationwide.
