The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has warned that thunderstorms and rainfall will affect several parts of Nigeria from Monday to Wednesday, with strong winds potentially occurring ahead of storms in some locations. The agency issued the warning in its weather outlook released on Sunday in Abuja.

For Monday, NiMet forecast thunderstorms with light rain over parts of Taraba and Kebbi in the morning, while scattered thunderstorms and moderate rain are expected across parts of the North-East, Kaduna, Taraba and Kebbi later in the day.

In the North-Central, parts of Niger State could experience morning thunderstorms, with most areas of the region expected to record thunderstorms and moderate rain in the afternoon or evening.

Southern states are also expected to experience wet conditions during the three-day period. NiMet forecast cloudy weather on Monday morning, with isolated thunderstorms and light rain over parts of Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom and Cross River, followed by more thunderstorms later in the day. On Tuesday, thunderstorms and light rain are expected over parts of Ebonyi, Enugu, Abia and the South-South.

The agency said Tuesday would also bring thunderstorms and moderate rain to parts of the Federal Capital Territory, Niger, Nasarawa and Plateau states, while most parts of the northern region could experience thunderstorms and moderate rain later in the day. On Wednesday, NiMet forecast thunderstorms and moderate rain across parts of Borno, Bauchi, Gombe, Kaduna, Adamawa and Taraba, with additional rainfall expected across the North-Central and southern regions.

NiMet advised Nigerians to take precautions because strong winds may precede thunderstorms. Residents were urged to secure loose objects, avoid driving during heavy rainfall, disconnect electrical appliances during thunderstorms and stay away from tall trees because of the risk of falling branches. The agency also advised airline operators to obtain airport-specific weather reports and relevant flight documentation when planning operations.
