African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has promised to introduce a minimum monthly wage of ₦500,000 for Nigerian workers and restore petrol subsidy if elected president in the 2027 general election.

Sowore, who is also the publisher of SaharaReporters, made the commitments in a post on his official X account on Monday. He said attempts to challenge his proposed wage policy with statistics would not change his position, arguing that Nigerian workers deserve wages that can adequately meet their living expenses.

“Under our government, Nigerian workers will earn a minimum wage of at least N500,000 monthly. We will also restore the petrol subsidy,” Sowore said. His proposal comes amid continuing political debate over how Nigeria should address rising living costs following the removal of the petrol subsidy.

The subsidy question has also featured in the policy positions of other presidential contenders. Former Vice President and African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar has proposed a targeted arrangement involving support for domestic refineries, rather than a return to the previous import-based subsidy system. Other candidates have taken different positions on the issue, including proposals focused on reducing domestic refining and petrol costs.

Sowore’s latest proposals therefore place wages and petrol pricing among the economic issues likely to feature prominently in the 2027 presidential campaign. His stated position is to combine a ₦500,000 minimum monthly wage with restoration of petrol subsidy, while other candidates have proposed alternative approaches to reducing the cost of living and supporting Nigerian workers.
