The Osun State Police Command has warned against a planned protest by suspected cultists following the killing of Olalekan Oyeyemi, popularly known as Emir, an Accord Party chieftain and ally of Governor Ademola Adeleke. The warning comes after members of the Aye Confraternity reportedly gave the police seven days to arrest those responsible for his death or face a protest.

Emir was reportedly killed last Sunday in Ile-Ife during a peace meeting convened to resolve a dispute over leadership and control of a motor park within the Accord Party structure. His killing has triggered tensions, with social media mobilisation reportedly underway among individuals demanding justice for the slain political figure.

In a statement, the Police Public Relations Officer, Deputy Superintendent of Police Abiodun Ojelabi, said the command had received intelligence about a protest notice allegedly issued by a group calling itself the “Congress of Cultists,” which police linked to the Neo-Black Movement, popularly known as Black Axe.

The police described the group as “faceless” and cautioned those seeking to exploit Emir’s killing to cause unrest, threaten public peace or engage in criminal activities to reconsider their plans. The command warned that it would not tolerate attempts to use the incident as a pretext for violence, adding that officers and other security agencies were prepared to respond decisively to any threat to lives and property.

Ojelabi also disclosed that investigations into Emir’s murder had commenced and yielded useful leads, although some suspects identified in connection with the killing were still at large. The command said efforts were ongoing to track down the fleeing suspects and bring them to justice, while appealing to members of the public with relevant information to assist investigators. Commissioner of Police Ibrahim Zungura urged parents, traditional rulers, religious leaders and community stakeholders to discourage youths from participating in violence or reprisal attacks. Residents were advised to remain calm and report suspicious activities to the nearest police station.
