The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has warned of thunderstorms, moderate to heavy rains and possible flash flooding across several parts of the country between Wednesday and Friday, September 9 to 11, 2026.

In its weather outlook released in Abuja on Tuesday, the agency forecast thunderstorms and rains across the northern, North-Central and southern regions during the three-day period, while warning residents to take necessary precautions against possible hazards associated with severe weather.

For Wednesday, NiMet said parts of the northern region could experience morning thunderstorms and light rains, particularly in Taraba and Kebbi states. Later in the afternoon or evening, isolated thunderstorms accompanied by moderate rains are expected across parts of Taraba, Borno, Yobe, Bauchi, Sokoto, Katsina, Zamfara, Jigawa, Kano and Kaduna states.

In the North-Central region, the agency forecast morning thunderstorms with light rains over parts of Nasarawa, Niger, Benue and the Federal Capital Territory. It added that most parts of the region could experience thunderstorms accompanied by moderate rains later in the day.

Across the southern states, NiMet predicted a cloudy atmosphere with chances of morning rains over parts of Lagos, Ondo, Ogun, Oyo, Rivers, Bayelsa, Delta, Edo, Cross River, Abia, Imo, Ebonyi and Akwa Ibom. Moderate rains are expected over most parts of the region later in the day.

Thursday Forecast

For Thursday, NiMet forecast patches of clouds over the northern region, with morning thunderstorms and light rains expected across parts of Jigawa, Kano, Borno, Yobe, Bauchi, Gombe and Kaduna states.

The agency said thunderstorms accompanied by moderate rains would occur in parts of Jigawa, Kano, Kaduna, Yobe, Bauchi, Gombe, Adamawa and Taraba states during the afternoon or evening.

In the North-Central region, sunny conditions with patches of clouds are expected, with prospects of morning thunderstorms and light rains over parts of the FCT, Nasarawa, Plateau, Niger and Benue states.

NiMet said thunderstorms with moderate rains are expected across the entire North-Central region later in the day.

For the South, the agency predicted light morning rains over parts of Ondo, Ogun, Abia, Imo, Enugu, Ebonyi, Lagos, Akwa Ibom and Cross River states, with continuous rains possible across most parts of the region later in the day.

NiMet also warned of a high possibility of flooding in parts of Imo, Abia, Ebonyi, Akwa Ibom and Cross River states during the forecast period.

Friday Forecast

For Friday, NiMet predicted partly cloudy skies across the northern region, with chances of thunderstorms accompanied by moderate rains over parts of Taraba and Adamawa states in the morning.

During the afternoon and evening, thunderstorms with moderate rains are expected over parts of Borno, Yobe, Bauchi, Gombe, Kano, Jigawa, Sokoto, Kebbi, Zamfara, Adamawa and Taraba states.

The agency forecast sunny skies with patches of clouds over the North-Central region, with chances of morning thunderstorms and light rains over parts of the FCT, Benue, Kogi, Nasarawa and Niger states.

It said most parts of the region could experience thunderstorms accompanied by moderate rains later in the day.

In the southern region, NiMet forecast a cloudy atmosphere with prospects of moderate morning rains over parts of Ondo, Ebonyi, Lagos, Ogun, Rivers, Akwa Ibom and Cross River states. Moderate rains are also expected over most parts of the southern region later in the day.

NiMet Issues Safety Advisory

NiMet warned that strong winds could precede thunderstorms and rainfall in affected areas, urging residents to take precautions and secure loose objects that could be blown away or cause injuries and property damage.

The agency advised residents in areas prone to flash flooding to activate emergency response mechanisms and avoid driving during heavy rainfall where possible.

It also advised the public to disconnect electrical appliances from power sockets during thunderstorms and stay away from tall trees to avoid injuries from falling branches or broken trees.

Airline operators were advised to obtain airport-specific weather reports and flight documentation from NiMet to support effective planning and safe flight operations.

NiMet urged Nigerians to remain vigilant and stay informed by following official weather updates as the forecast period continues.
