Oba Rasidi LadojaFormer Oyo Governor Addresses Speculations Over Worship Venue Choice

The Otun Olubadan of Ibadanland and former governor of Oyo State, Oba Rasidi Ladoja, has clarified his reasons for not attending the official Eid Prayer Ground at Agodi Gate, Ibadan. The revered traditional ruler, who has been notably absent from the Agodi Eid ground since 2011, emphasized that his decision was not politically motivated, contrary to public speculations.

Speaking to journalists after the Eid-el-Fitr prayers, Oba Ladoja explained that his choice of worship venue was based on personal comfort and not political disagreements. He stated that he found the University of Ibadan (UI) Eid Prayer Ground more conducive, citing better organization and environmental factors as key reasons for his preference.

Decision Rooted in Convenience, Not Politics

Addressing the growing concerns over his absence from Agodi Gate, the former governor dismissed any political undertones in his decision.

“There is nothing political about my decision to worship at the University of Ibadan’s Eid Prayer Ground. The environment there is more conducive for prayers, and that has been my preference for years,” he explained.

He further revealed that one of the major challenges at the Agodi Eid Ground was poor audio quality, which made it difficult for worshippers to properly follow the prayers and sermon.

“For years, I have raised concerns about the need for better sound systems at Agodi. Worshippers need to hear and participate fully in the prayers. I understand that improvements have been made, and I will consider joining future prayers at Agodi,” he added.

Commitment to Religious Harmony

Despite choosing an alternative location for the Eid prayers, Oba Ladoja remains a staunch advocate for religious unity and harmony in Ibadan. He made this clear during a visit to Governor Seyi Makinde at his Ikolaba private residence after the Eid-el-Fitr prayers.

The former governor’s visit to Governor Makinde alongside other Islamic faithful underscored his commitment to peaceful coexistence and collaboration with the state government. He expressed gratitude for the improvements made to the Agodi Eid Prayer Ground and commended the Oyo State government’s efforts in supporting religious gatherings.

Significance of Eid-el-Fitr and Community Unity

Oba Ladoja also used the occasion to emphasize the importance of Eid-el-Fitr, which marks the end of Ramadan fasting for Muslims worldwide. He urged the Muslim community to uphold the values of sacrifice, self-discipline, and kindness, which Ramadan promotes.

“Eid is a time of celebration, but also a period for reflection and unity. As a community, we must work together to promote peace, love, and mutual understanding,” he said.

The former governor also encouraged the people of Ibadan to respect individual choices regarding places of worship, urging them to prioritize their spiritual well-being over political interpretations.

Governor Makinde Appreciates Religious Leaders

Governor Seyi Makinde, who welcomed Oba Ladoja and other dignitaries at his residence, expressed appreciation for the unity among religious leaders in Oyo State. He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to religious inclusivity, stating that his government would continue to support both Islamic and Christian communities in the state.

The governor also praised the efforts of Muslim leaders in maintaining peace and order during religious festivities and assured them of continued improvements in worship facilities across the state.

Looking Ahead: Oba Ladoja Open to Returning to Agodi Eid Prayers

With the ongoing improvements at Agodi Eid Ground, Oba Ladoja signaled his willingness to reconsider attending future prayers there.

“I have heard about the improvements, and I appreciate the efforts made. Hopefully, by the next Eid, I will participate more actively at Agodi,” he concluded.

Conclusion

Oba Rasidi Ladoja’s explanation puts to rest rumors of political motives behind his choice of worship venue. His decision to pray at the University of Ibadan rather than Agodi Eid Ground was based purely on convenience and environmental factors. However, with recent improvements, the respected traditional ruler has expressed openness to returning to Agodi for future prayers.

As the people of Oyo State celebrate Eid-el-Fitr, the message remains clear: religious tolerance, peace, and unity should always be prioritized over political speculations.
