Police Apprehend Four Yahoo School Operators
According to a statement issued by the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, detectives from the command arrested four individuals suspected to be the ringleaders of the illegal cybercrime training center.
The alleged masterminds, identified as:
- Chibuike Ihejika (23)
- Stanley Ihejika (22)
- Obiora Oyediba (26)
- Emmanuel Oyedibe (25)
These suspects reportedly operated the fraudulent training center by recruiting young individuals from Anambra State and training them in internet fraud techniques.
Six Trainees Also Arrested
Alongside the masterminds, six individuals undergoing training in cyber fraud were arrested at the facility. The suspects, whose ages range from 12 to 26 years, include:
- Okorie Henry
- Otoh Chisom (20)
- Okeke Kwufrochikwu (26)
- Uchenna Obeji (26)
- Minachi Udochukwu (12)
- Chinedu Ukachukwu (23)
Authorities revealed that these young recruits were being groomed and taught various internet fraud schemes, including identity theft, email scams, and credit card fraud.
How the Syndicate Operated
Preliminary investigations suggest that the ringleaders not only recruited and trained young individuals in cyber fraud but also confiscated all fraudulent earnings from their trainees. The illegal Yahoo School exploited its recruits by forcing them to engage in criminal activities while the masterminds controlled all the illicit profits.
According to CSP Hundeyin, the suspects have been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Yaba, where they will undergo further investigation and prosecution.
Lagos State Commissioner of Police Commends Officers
Reacting to the successful operation, CP Olohundare Jimoh praised the dedication and professionalism of the officers involved in the raid. He assured Lagos residents that the police force remains committed to tackling cybercrime and other forms of criminal activity in the state.
“This operation sends a strong message to those engaging in cyber fraud and other criminal acts. The Lagos State Police Command is resolute in its mission to cleanse the state of criminal elements,” CP Jimoh stated.
He further called on Lagosians to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities in their neighborhoods, as community intelligence is crucial in combating crime.
Parents and Guardians Advised to Monitor Children’s Activities
In a warning to parents and guardians, CP Jimoh urged families to closely monitor their children’s activities, ensuring that they are not lured into illegal activities. He emphasized that cybercrime is increasingly targeting young individuals, who are often deceived by the false promises of quick wealth.
“Parents must play an active role in guiding their children away from crime. Cyber fraud destroys lives and tarnishes the reputation of the country. We must work together to protect the future of our youth,” he added.
Growing Concern Over Cybercrime in Nigeria
Cybercrime, often referred to as “Yahoo Yahoo”, has become a widespread issue in Nigeria, with many young individuals engaging in fraudulent online activities. These schemes often involve scamming unsuspecting victims, hacking, and money laundering. The Nigerian government, in collaboration with security agencies, has intensified efforts to crack down on cyber fraud syndicates operating within the country.
What’s Next for the Suspects?
With all 10 suspects now in custody, they will be subjected to detailed interrogation and legal proceedings. Authorities have vowed to prosecute the culprits to the full extent of the law to serve as a deterrent to others involved in similar activities.
The Lagos State Police Command has also reiterated its zero-tolerance policy toward cybercrime, vowing to intensify surveillance and enforcement measures against all forms of digital fraud.
Call for Public Support in Fighting Cybercrime
The police are urging the public to assist in the fight against cyber fraud by reporting any suspicious cyber activities in their communities. Citizens are encouraged to use dedicated police hotlines or visit the nearest police station to provide intelligence on fraudulent operations.
With growing technological advancements, the need for cybersecurity awareness and stricter laws against online fraud has never been more urgent.
Conclusion
The dismantling of the illegal Yahoo School in Iju marks a significant victory in Lagos State’s fight against cybercrime. However, authorities acknowledge that more work needs to be done to eradicate internet fraud and prevent young individuals from falling into the trap of digital crime.
By enhancing public awareness, enforcing stronger laws, and fostering collaboration between law enforcement and communities, Nigeria can make significant progress in combating cyber fraud and restoring integrity to its digital space.
