Speaker Mudashiru Obasa was still in Atlanta, Georgia, USA, when 32 members of the Lagos State House of Assembly impeached him yesterday in a smooth and decisive decision. Obasa’s eight-year term as Speaker came to an end with the action, which was free of internal strife.

His expulsion was based on accusations of corruption, egregious misconduct, and autocratic leadership, according to the MPs. One lawmaker said, “We have had enough,” and they announced they were prepared for a change. Hon. Mojisola Meranda, Obasa’s deputy, was sworn in as the new Speaker immediately after the impeachment, becoming the first woman to serve in Lagos State.

Former Deputy Chief Whip Hon. Fatai Mojeed was chosen to serve as Deputy Speaker. The Clerk of the Assembly, Olalekan Onafeko, was suspended, and all standing committees were disbanded. The position of Acting Clerk was given to Abubakar Ottun. Long-standing conflicts with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu intensified during the 2025 budget presentation, which led to Obasa’s dismissal.

Further alienating important political friends, the ousted Speaker had also sparked controversy by making vague references to his desire to become governor. Under the heading of “Matter of Urgent Public Importance,” Hon. Femi Saheed filed the motion for impeachment, charging Obasa of embezzlement, tyranny, and stoking dissension among lawmakers. Saheed characterized Obasa’s management style as “authoritarian and undemocratic,” noting that he frequently arrived late for meetings and disregarded legislative procedures.

A voice vote was used to unanimously approve the impeachment resolution, which was based on Section 92(2)(C) of the Nigerian Constitution. Hon. Meranda said in her acceptance address to lead with integrity and make sure the Assembly works for the benefit of Lagos citizens.
