Fear has gripped communities in Odigbo Local Government Area of Ondo State following the grim discovery of three headless corpses floating in a river between Ore and Odigbo towns. However, the Ondo State Command of the Nigeria Police Force has moved swiftly to allay fears, confirming that preliminary investigations suggest the victims were not residents of the state.

The chilling find, made on Sunday, sent shockwaves through the quiet communities, with many residents concerned that the gruesome scene may be linked to ritual killings. The mutilated bodies, found floating close to each other, appeared to have been deliberately positioned before being dumped, adding to the suspicion that the incident was a calculated act.

Panic as Police Investigate the Source of Corpses

At the core of the developing story is the keyword: Panic. The news of the discovery has not only unsettled locals but has also sparked fear of a possible ritual killing ring operating across state lines.

Police spokesperson, SP Olayinka Alayande, confirmed the incident in a statement issued to journalists. He explained that the matter was reported to the Ore Division of the police, after which a detective was dispatched to the scene. Additionally, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) engaged local community leaders and groups, urging them to assist in the identification process.

“We can confirm that three bodies were recovered from a river in Odigbo. They were headless and appear to have been killed elsewhere before being dumped here. So far, no family has come forward to identify the victims,” Alayande said.

He also emphasized that the police currently believe the bodies were washed into Ondo State by the river, possibly from neighboring areas. “We suspect they are not indigenes of this state. The river could have brought them from another region,” he added.

No Missing Person Reports in the Community

Local residents, including youth leaders and traditional leaders, have joined the police in trying to uncover the identities of the victims. But so far, their efforts have yielded no clues. Community youth leader, Mr. Shileola, who was among the first to visit the scene, described the discovery as deeply unsettling.

“I was shocked when I heard about it,” he said. “I rushed there, hoping to recognize the victims or gather some information, but nothing could be traced. There hasn’t been any report of missing persons in this area recently, which makes the whole thing more mysterious.”

Shileola noted that the absence of any indication of violence within the community supports the theory that the victims were likely murdered elsewhere. “This looks like a planned killing, and the killers probably used the river to hide the evidence or make it look like an accident,” he added.

Calls for Enhanced Security and Investigation

The discovery has reignited concerns over security in border communities and the need for increased surveillance, especially in rural and riverine areas. While the state police command has assured the public of a thorough investigation, many believe there is an urgent need for inter-state collaboration to trace the origins of the crime.

Residents are calling on the Ondo State Government and security agencies to intensify patrols and consider installing surveillance infrastructure around major water bodies. They argue that rivers, which are often poorly monitored, have become convenient routes for criminals to dispose of evidence undetected.

“This is not just a community problem—it’s a regional issue,” said one community elder. “Our people are afraid. We need visible action from the authorities. Whoever committed this crime must be brought to justice.”

Ongoing Investigation and Appeal for Information

Meanwhile, the police have appealed to the public for any information that could assist in identifying the victims or uncovering how the bodies ended up in the river. The corpses have been taken to a local hospital for further examination, and authorities have asked residents from neighboring communities and states to come forward if they suspect any of their relatives may be among the deceased.

SP Alayande reiterated that the investigation remains open and that detectives are exploring all leads. He also assured residents that there is no immediate threat to their safety but encouraged vigilance and cooperation with law enforcement.

Community on Edge, But Hope for Answers Remains

The gruesome discovery has cast a shadow over the peaceful towns of Odigbo and Ore. While the police believe the victims were likely not from Ondo State, the unsettling nature of the incident has left a trail of panic and suspicion in its wake.

For now, the community waits—hoping that answers will soon come and that justice will be served. The Ondo State Police Command remains firm in its commitment to solving the mystery, but until the source of the headless corpses is uncovered, fear and speculation will continue to linger along the riverbanks of Odigbo.
