The gubernatorial candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) in the forthcoming Osun State governorship election, Hon. Olajide Esan, has called on young people across the state to remain focused and actively participate in politics as a means of shaping their future.
Speaking during an interview with Newsworld, Esan emphasized that the time has come for youths to move beyond the sidelines and take up leadership roles, rather than limiting themselves to supporting older politicians as aides or personal assistants.
According to him, “The era where young people only serve as political assistants to the older generation must be reviewed. Youths have the capacity, energy, and ideas needed to drive meaningful development in our state.”
He also appealed to religious leaders, particularly within the Christian community, to play a more active role in encouraging young people to engage in the political process. Esan noted that religious institutions wield significant influence and can help reshape the mindset of youths towards governance and civic responsibility.
“Religious leaders, especially in churches, should begin to sensitize and mobilize their members, particularly the youth, to get involved in politics. It is not enough to pray for good governance; we must also participate in making it happen,” he said.
The AAC candidate further criticized what he described as the monetization of politics, warning that the dominance of “money-bag” politicians continues to hinder genuine development. He stressed that governance should be driven by sincerity of purpose and a commitment to public service, rather than financial influence.
“Politics should not be about who has the deepest pocket. It should be about who has the vision, the integrity, and the genuine intention to serve the people and bring about positive change,” Esan added.
Addressing the role of the media, Esan urged media organizations to uphold fairness and professionalism by providing equal opportunities for all candidates and political parties to present their manifestos to the electorate.
“The media must ensure a level playing ground for all contestants. Every candidate deserves to be heard so that the people can make informed decisions about who governs them,” he said.
He concluded by reiterating his commitment to people-oriented governance and called on the electorate in Osun State to prioritize competence and credibility over financial inducements in the forthcoming election.
