IBADAN, NIGERIA — Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has formally begun the process of selecting his successor ahead of the 2027 governorship election, signaling an early push to shape the state’s political future and sustain his administration’s legacy.
The governor disclosed this in his April 2026 newsletter titled “The Business of Governance,” revealing that consultations with selected stakeholders and individuals are already underway as part of a structured transition plan.

Makinde said the objective of the ongoing consultations is to ensure continuity of policies and projects under what he described as the next phase of governance in the state.

According to him, the process is designed to identify a candidate capable of sustaining the progress recorded under his administration and steering Oyo State toward long-term development goals.
He assured that the outcome of the consultations would be made public at the appropriate time.
Advisory Council Screening Aspirants
In a key step toward achieving this goal, the governor had earlier, on March 21, 2026, directed an advisory council to begin engagements with governorship aspirants within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The council, chaired by Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Bolaji Ayorinde, was mandated to interact with aspirants and recommend a suitable candidate to lead the party into the 2027 election under the proposed “Omituntun 3.0” agenda.
The initiative is intended to provide a level playing field for aspirants to present their vision and competence.
List of Key Contenders
Several prominent figures have already indicated interest in the race, including:
- Adedeji Olajide (Member, House of Representatives)
- Nureni Adeniran (Chairman, SUBEB)
- Bimbo Adekanmbi (Former Commissioner for Finance)
- Debo Akande (Chairman, Agribusiness Development Agency)
- Adebo Ogundoyin (Speaker, Oyo State House of Assembly)
Political observers say the diversity of contenders reflects both the strength and internal competition within the PDP in Oyo State.
Consensus Strategy and Political Signals
Makinde has hinted that the party may adopt a consensus arrangement to produce its candidate, with indications that the process could be concluded around April 8.
Analysts view this approach as a strategic move to avoid internal party conflict and present a united front ahead of the election.
However, consensus candidacy in Nigerian politics often comes with its own challenges, including managing the expectations of other aspirants.
Public Interest and Political Stakes
Residents of Oyo State are closely monitoring developments, as the choice of successor will likely determine whether Makinde’s policies and reforms continue beyond his tenure.
The succession plan also places the PDP in a potentially strong early position, while opposition parties are expected to respond with their own strategies in the coming months.
What Happens Next
All eyes are now on the PDP leadership in Oyo State as the consultation process progresses. The emergence of a consensus candidate—or otherwise—will shape the political dynamics leading into 2027.
Makinde’s final decision is expected to not only define his legacy but also influence the balance of power in one of Nigeria’s key states.
