Abuja – Stability Returns to PDP as Leadership Crisis Eases
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has officially reinstated Samuel Anyanwu as the National Secretary, ending weeks of internal disputes and litigation that threatened to destabilize the party’s leadership structure. The announcement was made on Wednesday during a high-level press briefing led by the Acting National Chairman, Ambassador Iliya Damagum, and attended by key political figures, including Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed and former Senate President Bukola Saraki.
Ambassador Damagum acknowledged that the decision to return Anyanwu to the National Working Committee (NWC) was a challenging but necessary step, given the growing need to restore order and cohesion within the party.
“It was a difficult decision, but it was accepted by many members of the party led by the organs of the party,” Damagum said.
This decisive move signals a renewed effort by the PDP to refocus on party unity and electoral readiness, especially with a fast-approaching political calendar and mounting pressure from both internal and external observers.

“Samuel Anyanwu Reinstated as PDP National Secretary Amid Leadership Turmoil”
Samuel Anyanwu’s return marks the end of a turbulent chapter marked by legal battles and internal rivalries over who rightfully holds the influential office of the party’s National Secretary. This role is critical not only to party administration but also to its communication and liaison with Nigeria’s electoral body, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The leadership conflict had created a vacuum and significantly disrupted the party’s ability to carry out core organizational functions, including the proper convening of the National Executive Committee (NEC) meetings. With Anyanwu’s reinstatement, the PDP leadership now appears poised to re-establish formal lines of governance and move past the recent period of disarray.
NEC Meeting Cancelled, Expanded Caucus Announced
In a related development, the PDP announced the cancellation of its scheduled NEC meeting, which was originally planned for June 30. Damagum cited procedural lapses involving INEC as the primary reason behind the abrupt change.
“Like INEC said, they don’t have our notice. So what we will have on June 30th is an extended Caucus,” he explained.
According to the PDP’s constitution and INEC’s operational guidelines, official correspondence, particularly concerning NEC meetings, must be jointly signed by both the National Chairman and the National Secretary. Earlier attempts to convene the meeting using a letter signed solely by Damagum were rejected by INEC, prompting the leadership to rethink its approach.
To resolve the impasse, Damagum confirmed that an expanded caucus meeting would now take place on the same date. This gathering is expected to function as a precursor to a properly constituted NEC meeting, with the goal of aligning internal processes with legal and constitutional mandates.
“We will have an expanded Caucus. At the next Caucus, we will take a decision leading to a proper NEC,” Damagum clarified.
A Turning Point in Party Reorganization
The PDP, once Nigeria’s dominant political force, has in recent years faced mounting challenges ranging from electoral defeats to internal schisms and leadership uncertainties. The reinstatement of Anyanwu, seen by many as a stabilizing figure, could signal a broader effort to rebuild the party’s internal infrastructure and improve strategic coordination ahead of future elections.
Party insiders suggest that this moment represents a pivotal point in the PDP’s attempt to rejuvenate its brand and recapture national relevance. By resolving key disputes at the top and re-engaging with party structures from the grassroots up, the PDP leadership hopes to present a unified front to the Nigerian electorate.
Still, political observers caution that long-term stability will depend on consistent adherence to party rules, transparent decision-making, and effective communication with regulatory bodies like INEC.
As the June 30 caucus meeting approaches, the spotlight will remain on how effectively the PDP can convert its internal reconciliation into meaningful action and restore confidence among its members and supporters across the country.
