ABUJA, Nigeria — Rep. Clement Jimbo, who represents Abak/Etim Ekpo/Ika Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, has said former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi cannot win any election in Nigeria, criticizing his political moves and support base, March 2, 2026.
Jimbo made the remarks during an interview with Cable News while responding to questions about Obi’s reported alliance with the African Democratic Congress coalition.
According to the lawmaker, Obi’s frequent party defections undermine his chances of electoral success.

“APC is not afraid of anyone, and I say this as a matter of fact,” Jimbo said. “You mentioned Peter Obi; let me address that directly. Peter Obi has been moving. What does that tell you? That he’s alive. But in which direction is he moving?”

Using an analogy, Jimbo argued that Obi’s political trajectory is not aligned with winning elections.
“If you have a flight to catch at a certain time, and you are not moving towards the airport, you will never catch that flight. So I can tell you that Mr. Peter Obi is moving against the direction of winning any election in this country,” he said.
Jimbo noted that Obi moved from the All Progressives Grand Alliance to the Peoples Democratic Party, then to the Labour Party and now aligns with the ADC coalition. He said such shifts prevent the consolidation needed to build a viable political structure.
“He has not stayed in a particular political party to build and consolidate,” Jimbo said. “If you know the percentage of stability of your house, then you can assure yourself a certain level of winning percentage.”
The lawmaker also questioned the strength of Obi’s grassroots support, alleging that many of his supporters are active mainly on social media rather than at the polling unit level.
“In my unit in Abak Urban Ward 1, I challenged Peter Obi to put on any platform who his Labour Party agent was because there was none,” Jimbo said. “As a political figure and a candidate of a political party that wants to win an election, it is required that you have your agents across the over 8,000 polling units. But he cannot meet that.”
He further challenged Obi’s supporters to demonstrate electoral engagement beyond online platforms.
“How many of them know their polling units? Elections are not done on social media. How many of them voted?” he said. “So, Peter Obi is only making noise. He cannot win any election in Nigeria.”
Jimbo contrasted Obi’s approach with that of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, whom he described as a committed party leader.
“The late President Muhammadu Buhari was a leader of the Congress for Progressive Change in the north. He stayed in his party, contested election in and out of season, three consecutive times. He never defected to another party,” Jimbo said. “He understood the commitment and sacrifice needed to build a political party.”
Jimbo maintained that the ruling All Progressives Congress remains confident ahead of future elections and is not threatened by opposition figures.
