Factional National Publicity Secretary of the Labour Party, Abayomi Arabambi, has accused the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, of leaving the party with large sums of money allegedly belonging to the organisation. The claims, made during an interview with Nevon HQ, have further deepened internal divisions within the party.

Arabambi alleged that the Labour Party had about ₦12 billion in one of its accounts and an additional $15 million in another dollar-denominated account before Obi’s exit. He further claimed that the former Anambra State governor left with the funds and subsequently distanced himself from the party.

According to him, Obi’s departure from the Labour Party was linked to the alleged financial issues, insisting that the situation would not be ignored. “In that account we had over 12 billion naira and in another dollar account we had 15 million dollars that Obi ran away with,” Arabambi said during the interview.

He also questioned Obi’s personal financial capacity, arguing that the figures being circulated were inconsistent with his known financial history. Arabambi further alleged that one of Obi’s companies in the United Kingdom previously went bankrupt due to a debt of about £900,000.

The allegations come amid ongoing leadership tensions and factional disputes within the Labour Party, which has struggled with internal disagreements since the 2023 general elections. Arabambi insisted that legal action would soon be taken over the alleged missing funds, stating that the matter would be pursued to a logical conclusion.

However, no official financial documents or independent verification were provided to support the claims at the time of reporting. Peter Obi has not issued a public response to the latest allegations.

The Labour Party has faced recurring internal conflicts involving rival factions and competing claims to leadership, with disputes often spilling into public discourse. Observers note that the latest accusations could further strain already fragile relations within the party structure.

As the situation develops, attention is expected to focus on whether formal legal proceedings will be initiated and how the party leadership responds to the renewed controversy.
