The All Progressives Congress (APC) has reaffirmed its decision to maintain a working relationship with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, despite ongoing internal tensions within the party in Abuja.

Speaking to journalists after a stakeholders’ meeting in the Federal Capital Territory, APC National Chairman Nentawe Goshwe Yilwatda disclosed that the party is deliberately accommodating Wike as part of a broader political understanding involving the opposition Peoples Democratic Party.

According to Yilwatda, Wike’s involvement with the ruling All Progressives Congress is based on an agreement that allows collaboration across party lines. He explained that the minister had formally secured approval from his party before accepting a role within the APC-led administration.

Yilwatda acknowledged that the arrangement has sparked concerns among longstanding APC members in the FCT, particularly as disputes emerge during ongoing party congresses. Some founding members have raised alarms over what they perceive as attempts by defectors from the PDP to dominate party structures.

He, however, urged party loyalists not to abandon the APC due to these pressures, emphasizing the need for unity and strategic patience. The chairman stressed that internal disagreements should not weaken the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.

“There must be harmony in decision-making processes,” Yilwatda stated, highlighting the importance of balancing interests in the allocation of both elective and appointive positions within the party.

In a move to support the ongoing congress activities, Yilwatda revealed that over ₦250 million has been earmarked for ward and state congresses in the FCT. He called on stakeholders to set aside ethnic, tribal, and religious divisions, urging them to embrace inclusiveness and collective responsibility.

Political analysts note that the APC’s approach reflects a broader strategy of coalition-building, even if it means managing complex relationships with figures outside its traditional base. The inclusion of Wike, a prominent PDP figure, is seen as both a tactical advantage and a source of internal friction.

Yilwatda emphasized that diversity and tolerance must guide the party’s future, noting that all groups should feel represented and valued. He maintained that only through unity can the APC strengthen its position and remain competitive in the next election cycle.

As the 2027 elections draw closer, the unfolding dynamics within the APC, particularly in the FCT, are expected to play a crucial role in shaping political alignments and party cohesion across the country.
