“Every Decision I Make is About Tomorrow” – Tinubu

President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to securing a prosperous future for Nigeria’s youth, stating that the removal of fuel subsidies was a necessary step to protect future generations. Speaking at the inauguration of the National Youth Congress Planning Committee at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, Tinubu declared that his policies were designed to empower young Nigerians and foster economic stability.

The President emphasized that investing in infrastructure and creating opportunities at home would discourage the mass migration of young professionals, popularly known as the “Japa” trend.

“When you remove oil subsidy, you’re protecting the future of generations yet unborn. Where’s the investment for infrastructure? Many professionals are leaving Nigeria, but if we grow prosperity back home and empower people, they will stay,” Tinubu stated.

Nigeria’s Economy “Has Turned the Corner”

President Tinubu acknowledged the initial economic challenges his administration faced, describing them as a period of uncertainty and difficulty. However, he expressed optimism, claiming that the economy had improved, with inflation easing and investor confidence rising.

“When we started, it looked so foggy, dicey, and hopeless. We were fetching water from a dry well, but today, the economy has turned the corner. Prices are falling, confidence in our economy is improving, and investors are looking in,” he asserted.

The President encouraged the youth to actively participate in shaping Nigeria’s development, calling them the “heartbeat of the nation.” He invited them to engage in governance by openly sharing their concerns and suggestions.

“Look at me in the face, tell me whatever you think is wrong and the way you want things done. We’ll try to implement all of it as long as it is for the prosperity of this country,” Tinubu said.

Inauguration of the National Youth Congress Planning Committee

As part of his administration’s drive to strengthen youth engagement, President Tinubu formally inaugurated the National Youth Congress Planning Committee. The committee is tasked with organizing a youth-focused conference aimed at promoting youth empowerment, economic development, and national progress.

The Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, highlighted the importance of the initiative, stating that the government is “ready to listen to and incorporate the ideas of young people in governance.” He noted that the committee consists of representatives from key federal ministries, civil society organizations, NGOs, and international partners like the World Bank.

A lead member of the planning committee, Samson Itodo, Executive Director of Yiaga Africa, commended President Tinubu for recognizing the role of youths in national development. He emphasized that the conference would provide a platform for young Nigerians to contribute meaningfully to policymaking.

Focus on Technology, Agriculture, and Food Security

In his closing remarks, President Tinubu urged the youth to explore opportunities in technology, agriculture, and food security. He emphasized the need to develop “food sovereignty” and leverage innovation for national growth.

“Let’s employ technology every way possible, let’s look at our farming conditions, and let’s hear what we can do to empower youths. I like you all—I can’t be young again, maybe in the next life, I’m envious of all of you,” Tinubu joked.

Conclusion: A Call to Action for Nigeria’s Youth

With the National Youth Congress Planning Committee now officially inaugurated, expectations are high for youth-driven solutions to Nigeria’s pressing challenges. As Tinubu’s government continues to implement policies aimed at economic recovery and empowerment, the coming months will reveal how effectively young Nigerians can shape the nation’s future.
