President Tinubu Grants Automatic Employment To 774 National Health Fellows
Fellows to Strengthen Primary Healthcare System Across Nigeria
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced automatic employment for 774 fellows of the National Health Programme, ensuring their job placement after completing their one-year tenure. The announcement was made during the presidential launch of the programme in Abuja, where the President emphasized the fellows’ crucial role in monitoring and improving Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) across Nigeria’s 774 local government areas.
Addressing the newly appointed fellows, Tinubu confidently declared, “You are hired,” reaffirming their immediate absorption into the healthcare workforce.
He added:
“The Coordinating Minister and the champion of this program have requested approval, and luckily, the Minister of Finance is here also.”

Strengthening Nigeria’s Healthcare System
President Tinubu underscored the programme’s significance, describing it as a vital initiative to expose participants to global best practices, equip them with essential knowledge and skills, and reinforce Nigeria’s healthcare system.
“Healthcare is a critical pillar of national development. No country can prosper if its people are unhealthy. Unsustainable health programs pose a significant danger, and sustainable development is only possible with a strong healthcare system—you are the pillars,” he stated.
His decision followed an appeal from the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Ali Pate, who urged federal, state, and local governments to integrate the fellows into the permanent workforce to advance universal health coverage.
A Merit-Based Programme for Healthcare Innovation
The National Health Fellows Scheme was designed to drive innovation and impactful change within Nigeria’s healthcare sector. Fellows were carefully selected through a rigorous merit-based process from an initial pool of over 359,000 applicants.
This initiative is a key component of Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which focuses on revitalizing Nigeria’s primary healthcare system to enhance accessibility, efficiency, and sustainability.
With their permanent employment now secured, the 774 fellows will play a pivotal role in improving healthcare delivery across Nigeria, ensuring that quality medical services reach every local government area.
