President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has signed the Appropriation (Amendment) (No. 4) Bill, 2025 into law, extending the implementation period of the 2025 budget from September 30, 2026, to December 31, 2026.

Presidential spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, confirmed the development in a statement on Wednesday, saying the President’s assent followed the swift passage of the amendment bill by both the Senate and the House of Representatives on Tuesday, September 29, 2026.

The extension gives Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) additional time to complete ongoing capital projects and utilise funds already appropriated for approved programmes before the revised deadline.

According to the Presidency, the extension is intended to ensure that ongoing projects and critical government programmes are not disrupted by the expiration of the previous implementation deadline.

President Tinubu also commended the leadership and members of the National Assembly for their prompt consideration and passage of the bill, describing it as further evidence of cooperation between the Executive and Legislature.

The National Assembly had earlier considered the extension following concerns over the level of implementation of capital projects contained in the 2025 budget. The Senate approved the extension on Tuesday after considering a bill sponsored by Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele, representing Ekiti Central Senatorial District.

Bamidele had explained that the extension was necessary because several capital projects had not reached their expected level of implementation, despite funds being released to MDAs for their execution.

With the President’s assent, the implementation period for the affected components of the 2025 Appropriation Act will now run until December 31, 2026.
